Is my hermit crab dead?

  • So I had 3 hermit crabs, one sadly died today. My biggest hermit crab has been buried for at least 2 weeks now and I figured he is molting until my other hermit crab died today. I'm worried my other hermit crab is dead too but I do not want to disturb him if he really is molting! I don't know why my hermit crab died. Friday I found him in a corner with a leg detached and I read online to isolate him so I did and he started losing all of is legs and died :'( it really was a sad sight. I fed my hermit crabs something new 3 weeks ago, carrots.. idk if this has anything to do with it. My crabs are spoiled and I know I take care of them well. Should I dig up my other crab to check if he is alive! please help me I'm scared for the sake of my favorite crab!!

    I would pick him up. When they die they will fall out if the shell. I had some and they never did that. If the other one died then maybe its the food.

You shouldn't dig him up, hermit crabs like to borrow to molt for a while, as you probable already know. If I were you I'd smell the aquarium, if it smells of anything like fish or decaying things he could be dead, but also check to make sure their isn't any moldy food or leftover fish\food. Another idea is to put your other hermit crab into the isolation tank so that if the borrowing one is dead or sick or molting he catch the sickness or disturb the borrowing one. The carrot sticks is likely not the problem if their washed and don't have any pesticides or mold on them. Hope I helped, and I hope you figure out the problem soon.

I would check, you don't want a rotting corpse in your cage! If you want, stick you head in the cage and take a good whiff, if something stinks, i would check for sure! And i dont think the carrots did it, he may have cought a cold and died.
