Freshwater to Saltwater? Please Read! Help!?
-
I am going to convert my freshwater tank (15 gallons) into a saltwater tank. I have read up on how to do so however I am still skeptical about how to go about it. I am new to saltwater, however I have had freshwater tanks for years. 1. I have a bio-wheel filter. I have heard both that I can use this type of filter and that it is not recommended. Can I simply remove the wheel if that is the problem on the filter? 2. What are all of the components I will need to setting this tank up? For example, what will I need: I have the tank, filter, canopy with regular lighting (I don't plan on needing any special lighting)...Do I need a protein skimmer? 3. I have heard it is better to buy salt water than mix it yourself...is this true? If so, how and where do you purchase salt water? 4. I was thinking on buying clowns for my tank. Is there anything species-specific I may need to tank into account? I know they are a hardy fish. Thanks to all who help me out. I am just unsure as there are many different views on a saltwater setup.

Answer:
You can't keep clowns in your tank, or as a beginner. They need to be in a mated pair. They need a 40 gallon minimum tank, live anemone, and live sand. To themselves. Why don't you try brackish water and some bumblebee gobies. Or stick to freshwater and get 3-4 dwarf puffers. You have to buy marine salt (not aquarium salt) from your pet store. Clowns are not a hardy fish. Please don't try it. A minimum of ten PER fish. Then you have to add in the space for an anemone. And why would you want to keep a fish in MINIMUM conditions? I'm sure you could live in a closet, but would you want to?

This is a terrible idea. First off saltwater fish need 4 gallons per fullgrown inch. So clowns get 3 inches, say u got 2. Thats 6x4 u need a 24 gallon tank. Your filter wont workin in salt , yes u need a protein skimmer and 15 pounds of live rock. Your looking at 500+ dollars for maybe a single clown fish
I wouldn't try it. They are not very hardy and if they die, you just spent $16 dollars or more on nothing. They are pretty and interesting but they require so much. Btw they don't need live rock or an anemone. Most are store raised and don't even know what an anemone is, sometimes the anemone will eat the clown fish. Live rock just helps with the filtration but is not needed. A protein skimmer is a good idea though. People have done it before, some in a 10 gallon tank but i don't think it's worth it. All the care, time, and money you have to dedicate to a small saltwater tank when you can just get a pretty fish like fancy guppies or a cute fish like dwarf puffers for your tank. That is a pretty decent sized tank and can fit some pretty freshwater fish. Just don't get cichlids or goldfish. You can get 3 fancy guppies (1 male 2 female) and you will have 50 in a month. Or you can go brackish and get 3 dwarf puffers. They are cute and very different than freshwater. Hope i helped and good luck with your tank
1st off i'll advice you to follow up with your freshwater tank 1st .. and do more research about the topics ..yes we may answer your question here on yahoo but there are many topics we may miss or details which are hard to explain .. salt water tanks are difficult to say the least to maintain..!! they are expensive .. and every little thing that can go wrong will go wrong if you don't maintain it properly and this will kill your fish !! for Q1 :A1 ok the problem with changing your filter is not because of the filter it's self .. it's because of the fine bubbles it creates in salt water(the saltwater holds this fine particles and if it happens to go into the gills of your saltwater fishes that's the end sorry to say it)...you should get a protein skimmer instead this removes the dirt and particles with the same process (creating fine bubbles ) but it lets the bubbles rise to the top and only let the clean water through to your tank !! for Q2 :A2 everything will be the same except for your current lighting(for fish only tank will be ok) .. if you plan to get a reef tank the lighting will have to change for a different wavelength remember that these are animals(that do fotosintesis) not plants .. so you need to feed them too!! protein skimmer will do as your filter ..as well as a measurement device for the salt content in the tank as well as a lot of tests kits here is the link !! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3O7RmMTeL7w for Q3 :A3 it's better to buy it cause they know the amount of salt to put in the water before they sell it to you .. for a novice ..pls buy it but if you already know what to do then go ahead and Diy ..it for Q4 :A4 the rest is the same as fresh water tank .. 1g of water for 1 cm of fish .. and be generous with this calculations !! the more room your fish has the more chances it has in multiplying .. if it has a mate !!
