Answer:
Clown fish are Saltwater Fish. You do need to realize how much goes into a saltwater tank before you start up on one. It takes a lot of time and the water has to be near perfect for the fish and you also need to know that a lot of money goes into saltwater tanks. You have to buy special saltwater mix. You NEED the correct amount of salt in the water and test the salinity. It is also best and recommended to wait a month and let the bacteria and everything in the tank grow and cycle before adding any fish. You also need the water at the right temperature as well as LIVE sand. They come in bags and those get expensive too! Smaller tanks (less than 20 gallons) is a lot harder. So the bigger your tank the easier it will be. My husband and I had a 180 gallon saltwater reef. It was amazing but the water changes, checking the levels daily, and the $money that we put into that tank was a lot of time and a lot of work. You really need to read up on how to start a saltwater tank since this is your first time. Theres a lot more to it than dumping fish in some water. Do a lot of research and how to start up on it and if you are willing to spend the time and money on a tank. I think you will really enjoy it, I did but do realize there is a lot that goes into a saltwater tank and you need to do research first :) Best of luck!!

First, get a book on marine fish keeping. It's not specifically clown fish you need to know about, it's the whole set up and maintenance of a marine aquarium. Cycling, filtering, water tests etc. Not saying you can't get a pair of Clowns, but you will need a decent size tank, probably 40gal or so. Not going to be cheap to set up, but clown fish are one of the easier marine fish to keep, so it should be possible for a beginner to keep them, just do that research first. http://www.fishlore.com/SaltwaterBeginners.htm http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-ClownFish.htm Ian

http://www.fishlore.com/Profiles-ClownFish.htm This is really something you need to read up on by yourself. It's far too much information for someone to post here. Along with the above link, you also need to do some research on caring for a Saltwater or Marine fish tank. If you've never taken care of a saltwater tank, I wouldn't suggest getting a tank any smaller than 30-40 gallons. Smaller tanks are harder to take care of and not recommended for saltwater beginners. 2 Clowns should have at least 30 gallons anyway.

if you are serious about this I would get as much info as I can in my hands on before you start. a min tank for clowns can be as small as 15 gallons for perculas/ocellaris(false percs nemo) but again there are many species of clownfish. when you start out your tank you DO NOT want to buy the clowns at the same time, make sure you have everything you are going to need like lighting, skimmers/filters, live rock/substrate* heater, test kit and a hydrometer for testing the salinity level. you will need to cycle your tank(The nitrogen cycle of a saltwater aquarium is a chain reaction in nature resulting in the birth of various types of nitrifying bacteria, each with their own job to do. Each new bacteria born consumes the the byproduct of the previous one, and in turn gives birth to the next bacteria. The biological filter is the heart of every saltwater aquarium. Without a strong, healthy biological filter, a tank will never be able to support a healthy population of fish and invertebrates.) buy your salt mix, and ask if they have live rock which will help speed up the process of the cycling. Depending on the type of filtration set-up you'll have will account for the process as well, look into a hang on refugium for small tanks. After about a week test your water i.e. ph, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, calcium. If all parameters are ideal then you can buy some fish, remember to acclimate the fish properly. *you can buy live sand as well as the live rock when you start up. email me with ?'s and have a great time, remember patience is key in starting out
