Please help my clownfish are fighting (10 POINTS)?

  • I have a 40 gallon saltwater tank with a clownfish in it. Yesterday i bought another one because i wanted them to pair up. The new clownfish that i got is getting picked on alot by the older clownfish and his fins are all teared up. Are they just deciding which one is going to be the female? should i take the new one out of the tank?

    If the clowns are from the same species, then it's likely the aggression is part of the pairing process. Sometimes it's best if the newer clown is not the same size (preferably smaller) so they both know which one is the dominant clown, which eventually becomes a female. The subordinate clown should show a wiggling gesture as a sign of submission. You should carefully monitor the clowns to see if the new clown is too stressed out from the resident individual and separate them. That is because the new clown fish has been invading the territory of the old clown fishes tank, i would advise you to get a new tank and put it in or to sell it on, you could also sell both of them and then get two clownfish at the same time then neither of them will have a new terrirotory to defend (:

JUST PUT THEM IN SEPERATE SMALLER TANKS BUT NOT RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER SO THEY DONT JUST STAY THERE STARING AT THE OTHER

Unless there's a reasonable difference in size between the two, get it out of there and into a quarantine to recover. The fish with the established territory will already be determined as the female, hence the need to add a smaller one to become the male. Also, simply adding another fish doesn't guarantee a pair - and oftentimes won't happen in a closed system.
