How much lighting do I need for my 55-gallon saltwater tank?

Best bulb for a saltwater tank with anemone?

  • Hello. I currently have a 29 gallon Saltwater setup. As a light, I have a Power Glo High Intensity Aquarium Lamp 18000K, 20W (T-8) I wanted to know if this is the best lighting for my green bubble tip anemone? The anemone is doing great. In fact it seems to be thriving. I know that they need plenty of light from the research I have looked into. The problem is that I'm not to educated regarding the specs of the bulbs. The bulb I currently have was reccomended from a pet store where I purchase some of my saltwater supplies as well as food for my community tank. I just have noticed that the anemone seems to have lost a bit of it's green color on it's tips. Other than that everything seems to be fine. I was concerned that this may be because of the lighting? I also have a pair of Ocellaris Clown fish that are hosting the anemone well :) Any recomendations for better lighting would be much appreciated. I love my inhabitants in my tank and want to make sure that the lighting is superb for them. Thank you.

  • Answer:

you will have to spend about 200$ on new high intensity lighting, the fixture you have is not acceptable at all regardless of the bulb you choose. you need more intensity , 3-5 watt per gallon . this is only possible with t5 lights or power compact lighting. and these don't go in your current light fixture. try a better fish store for advice, or look for books by Julina Sprung or one of the other experts. I'm assuming you went to a petco/petsmart or something like that. That's the only place where they would sell you a single bulb and claim you can keep anemones with it.

You definitely need more lighting. You don't mention how long you've had the anemone, which is important. Loss of color in your anemone indicates a loss of zooxanthellae, which could be the beginning of it's demise. Upgrade your light fixture to at least a dual T5 fixture (one daylight and one actinic bulb works well) with about 100 watts minimum over your tank.

You only ave a single strip T8? Nope, not enough light. A few VHOs would be minimal for a bulb tip, or some HO T5s, at least 4 bulbs, even CFs are fine in a dual bulb fixture. All other clownfish anemone would need a halide. Loss of color is BAD. It indicates not enough light.
