Help! My male betta fish will not eat. What can I do?
-
I got him a few days ago, and he has not eaten since. So it has been around 3 days. He is in a good bowl for his size, and he is a pretty small betta fish, at least for now. His water is warm and conditioned to take out chlorine. He has a plant for a hiding spot. He acts healthy, and he swims and is alert. I just can't even get him to look at the food. WIll someone please give me any tips? I was thinking of maybe trying a different kind or waiting until his hunger gets the best of him. Does anyone have any ideas?

Answer:
My fish, like Andy's, eats bloodworms...I fed him pellets for a little while and he would simply nip at them once or twice and not have anything to do with them after. I introduced him to freeze dried bloodworms and he went CRAZY over them! Bloodworms, shrimp, and insects (among other things) are what they eat in the wild, after all. Try the bloodworms...you can get a huge container at Petco for about $7. If he ends up liking them, try feeding him freeze dried brine shrimp, or something equivalent, so he doesn't get bored with the worms. =] If you vary his food, he'll be one happy fishy! Just be careful he doesn't overeat! ...mine did when I first gave him the worms...

I just got one too, and he won't eat either. Don't be worried, he's probably still warming up to his new home. Mine just started eating and he only eats a little bit. Are you using Betta food? That could be the problem, but if he seems healthy, he's probably just not warmed up yet. Hope that helps!
You're doing everything right. Do not worry yet. If part of the problem is he won't look at the food slash doesn't see it, I tap my finger on the surface of the water, very gently, to attract attention to the food. I feed Top Fin Betta Color Enhancing Pellets, which I highly recommend, especially over flakes. Flakes are difficult for bettas to eat and cause a lot of waste. If you got a kit for your betta which came with flakes, don't use them, cause your betta probably won't touch them. If you are using pellets, there's a chance you have a picky eater in your hands, because he may simply not like him. I just got a new female who has also decided that she doesn't like pellets. I've been feeding her freeze-dried bloodworms (not nearly as gross as they sound, I promise!) which she gobbles up. So try those if the whole "hunger won't get the better of him" thing won't work, though in theory it would after long enough. I won't try that method for over a week though. You can also try another brand of pellet food, like the one I said above: sometimes they are just picky about the brand. Make sure that you're using a floating pellet by the way; if you have the kind that float and then sink at the slightest touch, don't use them. Too hard to eat. Anyway, good luck, and if all else fails, try the bloodworms!
I would try a different type of food. My betta only eats certain types/brands.
My betta fish only eat bloodworm. I think you should try bloodworm. I bought my from walmart.
