Would adding water conditioner to well water make the water safe for my beta fish?
-
I just got a beta today, and instead of buying distilled water, we added water conditioner to our well water. It says on the bottle that it treats tap water, but says nothing about well water.

Answer:
Water conditioners typically remove chloramines which you may not have in well water. If your well water had chloramines then it helped if not then it probably didn't do anything. The bigger problem might be the pH of your well water. It may be too high for your betta or it may have been too big of a pH change from the distilled water you normally keep the betta in (distilled water is not a good idea, btw). Test the water's pH and if its higher than neutral I would just use bottled spring water for water changes - add the water conditioner just in case. Edit - everyone is saying that if the water is safe to drink then its safe for your fish but that is not true. You can drink liquids with a wide range of pH but fish have much less of a pH tolerance than you do. Bettas like a neutral to slightly acid pH but a lot of well water has a high pH - possibly as high as 8. This is safe to drink but not healthy for your fish.

Your well water came out of your tap. It is the same thing. A lot of people with well water technically do not need the conditioner for the same reasons as people on water supplied by water companies. Odds are your water is chlorine free.
Hi! If you drink the water and it doesn't hurt you then it will be fine for your betta. I hope this helps. Good luck!
Chances are your well water doesn't even need treating. Water conditioner is mostly to neutralise dangerous chlorine in tap water, as no one has added any chlorine to your well water, it should be safe with no conditioner. If it's not safe for fish to live in, it's probably not safe to drink either, so you have bigger problems than just aquarium water. Adding water conditioner will not do anything bad, it's just probably not needed. Distilled water is NOT good for aquariums as it has zero hardness and the pH is likely to be unstable. Ian
If the well water is drinkable for you, then yes, itll be fine. If its drinkable for a dog or a horse or livestock, its probably fine too.
