Why did my fish die? I did a water change and they died within 24 hours.?

I did a water change on my 55 gallon fowlr ... the tank was not filled to its maximum so i took out 5 gallons of water and put in 12 gallons of new water... within 24 hours my 2 damsels, sand sifting starfish, 3 turbo snails, and emerald crab had died leaving only my two hermit crabs alive. Can anyone tell me what went wrong I'm extremely new at this and just want to know how i can fix this. Also do you think it would be smart to have someone come set everything up properly and show me what to do so i don't have this problem again? If so what is the normal price range for such a job.

What do the water tests tell you? If you aren't testing the water, then who knows? A sudden die off after a water change suggests wrong salt level, temperature shock or contaminated water. Simply changing the water should have pretty much zero effect on the fish. as long as you do it correctly. Ian
Your tank seems to be a salt water tank....silly question, did you salt the new water before putting it in....?
Maybe it had nothing to do with the water change. Maybe there was a problem before you changed the water. Yes, I think it's an excellent idea to have a consultant come check things out for you. I don't know the price, but you have a nice setup already, so you've already invested some money in it, and getting a consultant's advice at the outset would probably save you much later. The owner of my local fish store does that kind of work (she also has contracts for weekly cleanings for several clients). I honestly don't think it would be that much, but that depends on your area. Good luck!
Without experience, you are far better off with freshwater or paying someone to set up and care for your tank. A locally own aquarium shop should be able to help.
You Know about the nitrogen cycle? Right? Which begins after we've taken home our aquarium, installed it and added our first live rock or fish to the aquarium. This is the worst time of aquarium ownership you'll encounter. This is a time when the ammonia given off by that live rock or fish will begin to grow, and naturally occurring nitrifying bacteria will grow and consume that ammonia, ultimately converting it something non-toxic. As eager as you are to add live fish and corals to the tank, don't do it. We have to wait until we test and find that there is no ammonia or nitrite present, before it's safe to add fish. Regarding the nitrogen cycle, there are several products on the market that will help speed up this process, but typically speaking, it can take anywhere up to two months before it's completed, and adding more fish is safe and stable. But always test your water before adding fish, just to make sure. This could be your problem. Also the salt level must be the same when adding new water to tank.
Ive never had a large tank but i have changed water and also had fish die. According to the petstore it could have been the shock from the water temperature.
