How can I tell my betta fish is sick?

I can't tell if my betta fish is sick! Help please! :(?

  • My boyfriend got me a betta fis and I've had it for maybe a month or so an I think he still eats I haven't been watching If he does or doesn't. He isn't really active, I mean he does swim around but usually he just chills at the bottom. I've been look on several websites and I just can't really tell what he has if he is sick. I've never had a betta fish...or any fish before, so I just don't know. Do I take him in to the pet store or something? Help :(

  • Answer:

Is he in a 5+ gallon heated and filtered aquarium? EDIT: Your knowledgable Pro Neighbor you are not an expert. Rice paddies are shallow but are acctually very vast and warm.

Well if his aquarium (which by the way should be at lest 5 gallons, and filtered) isn't heated, then that's probably the problem. When left in cold water, bettas become depressed, and lethargic (no energy). Try buying a small heater and keep the temperature around 78 degrees, he should perk right up.

Does he have a heater? Heaters play a large part in betta care. Their water should be kept at a steady 78-82 degrees. Filters are also very important. A warm clean tank will keep a betta stress free making it less susceptible to disease. Do 25% water changes 2-3 times a week.

no this is normal i have a Betta fish for like a year now and they take long rests and don't move but make sure u only feed him the amount food he can eat

First read my answers in my profile for more info. Betta's do go to the bottom to rest allot. You must make sure his water is preconditioned before adding any fish, and check the PH which would be 6.8 - 7.0 Water temp must be 78-86 degrees period I have been typing this for days now" A betta can live a long happy life in a 1.5-3 gallon tank period. They naturally live in rice paddies in Thailand where they can only move about 12 inches anyway so the theory about a 5 gallon minimum is exaggerated. Thumbs up or down, the truth is the truth period.

not to be repetitive, but like everyyyyybody else said, he needs to be in atleast a 5 gal tank with water at about 78 degrees ( get a heater) that is also filtered. If you have him in a vase or a bowl, im sure hes stressed out and colddd. watch him foor a few minutes after you feed him and see if he eats the food. my bettas eat at least 5 pellets each time i feed them. 1-2+ times a day. Also, bettas really like frozen brine shrimp :) try those.
