What tank is better for my betta fish?

What kind of fish can be in the same tank as a betta?

  • I have 2 girl betta's, and 1 male betta. I know the male cant be with the females so can it be with other types of fish? possibly common goldfish? Can the girls be with any other types? If they cant then tell me because i really don't want my fish to get killed. Also what would i need for the other fish that would go with the betta? by the way i have a 10 gallon tank and a filter not a Heater or air pump. I can buy them though so let me know if i need any of the for the other types of fish. By the way i have a 10 gallon tank with a filter, but not an air pump or heater. Can i feed them the same food? Care for the other type of fish? decorations needed or can't be in with the fish? anything else i need to know.

  • Answer:

Bettas can be kept with anything that is NOT (this applies to both genders): Another betta (with exception of groups of 5 or more females) Gourami (related to bettas) Fish resembling bettas (like fancy guppies, betta can confuse them and attack). Aggressive (bettas are weak fighters and will get killed) Cichlids Nippy (bettas have long fins, and will get harrased by nippy fish). Coldwater fish (bettas are tropical) Marine fish (must I explain?) Much larger or smaller than the betta (one can become other's food, and big fish really do not belong in 10 gallon tanks.) Absolutely no goldfish (coldwater and way too large for 10 gal). Here's a list of species that can live in a 10 gallon tank (anything from the community section besides gourami will work), and yes you will need a heater (bettas are tropical, and all fish that can live in a 10 gal, besides white cloud mountain minnows are tropical as well). (for individual needs of given specie just click it): http://theaquariumwiki.com/Stocking_a_10_Gallon_Tank Air pump is not necessary, in a small tank like 10 gal all aeration and circulation can be handled by the filter alone.

Male bettas especially are solitary and territorial fish. Putting him with other fish would make the other fish unhappy too, seeing that male bettas tend to try to kill everything... and succeed. If you get a heater, you can put the females with almost any non-aggressive fish. (such as tetras, plecos, rainbow sharks, etc.) Just make sure that there is no/very little current, the females may have trouble swimming. You can feed them all tropical flake food. Give lots of hiding spots.

Great question rather than just taking the chance there are many fish that can go with it. Any fish with small fins doesn't show the betta competition, and you could add guppies, tetras, also a pleco to clean ur tank for ya haha be careful not to overstock oh and one more thin females can be together it is recomended that they are in groups of three or more though

sometimes fish don't get along, even if someone else has them together, it's part of keeping an aquarium. Bettas are notorious for bugging other fish and then the other fish tear off all the betta's fins. That being said, Nex's post covers what you have asked very well. Decorations like lots of plastic plants will help. There's almost no way to have too much plants.

They can go with Tropical fish such as guppies, plattys, ect. You will need to get both an air pump and heater. keep the heater between 75-82 :)

I had a 30 gallon fish tank. I had an outside filter that hang off the back side of tank. you will need a heater to keep temp approx 74 f to 82 f . Also about 2 inches of clean gravel for bottom. The heater would be for if you want to share the tank with other tropical fish. It true you can have one male and a couple of females betta together. You can also have a school neon tetra (6), and school of Harlequin rasbora (6) , both peaceful fish and my favorites which love to swim in groups. Do not have angel fish as male betta will attach other fish with big fin displays. So basically they can be kept in a community tank. check at your local pet shop what are other good community fish. Beware of some fin nipping fish like the Tiger Barb or silver dollar fish, not a good fish to have with betta.

I disagree with the fact that they can be kept with any other tropical fish species. They are highly aggressive towards these, Goldfish included. Male bettas go great with African Dwarf Frogs. They aren't fish, but are itty-bitty aquatic frogs that are absolutely awesome to have. I highly recommend getting an ADF or two. Remember to do your big share of research before buying any pet! For the Female Bettas, You have to be careful. They can be very unpredictable depending on their temperament and the specific betta itself. It is very hard to tell whether or not you female bettas will be compatable with other community tropical fish such as danios or platies. I recommend that you keep the female bettas together by themselves, or add more female bettas. You do not need an air pump for a betta fish, so you don't have to worry. It is kind of "iffy" on whether or not you should have a heater. Bettas are low-maintenance but if you really want them to thrive, it is preferable. All Bettas can eat the same food. Research all over the web on African Dwarf Frogs before you buy them. Become a personal ADF expert before you get your own, so you will be able to take great care of them. They are great pets and will come to recognize you! Not too hard to care for either, but treat them well (I spoil mine) Decorations are fine with these species (bettas and frogs) I hope you get an African Dwarf Frog! They are the best!

there are many fish that are compatible as betta tankmates. The four rules that you can use to determine whether a fish is compatible are 1) Not colorful or resemble a rival betta's colors (guppies) 2) Not a fin nipper (Tiger barbs are a big NO) 3) The right size for the size of the tank (No common plecos in a 10 gallon tank since they get to 2 feet in length) 4) Lives roughly in the same water conditions as a betta (no brackish/saltwater fish) more info here http://bettacare101.com/tankmates
