Who can tell me about Buenos Aires?

How can you tell if a buenos aires tetra is pregnant?

  • A couple of weeks ago, I noticed one of you buenos aires tetra was swelling up. I thought she had a disease, so I moved her to my "death" tank. (I know it sounds morbid, but I move my fish out of the community if they are sick, try to treat and then let nature take its course) So anyway, she's still acting normal, but I noticed today she's even bigger. I took her out of the tank to examine her, and it looks like there are small brown/redish colored eggs showing through a small opening close to her tail under belly. Are these eggs or do you think she's really sick?

  • Answer:

Generally females are deeper in the body and get "plump" compared to leaner males. I'm surprised about the "eggs" I've never heard of anyone seeing eggs in the fish! If she has been eating well and swimming well, then she probably is just gravid.

Other answers

She's likely gravid (pregnant). If the tetra is not showing other symptoms, then perhaps it is.

It seems you are not very direct. Did you think of simply asking her if she is pregnant?
