How To Raise Twin Babies?

Can my cockatiel raise her babies on her own?

  • So my male cockatiel was killed by my parakeet a little over a week ago. A couple days after his death my female cockatiel layed two eggs. She has been sitting on them for over a week now--and we are all really hoping that the babies will make it. But im worried that she might not be able to do the job on her own without her mate. I wondering if anyone has had a similiar situation and has any suggestions on what I can do??? And also im wondering how soon can i hand feed the babies if she needs my help to feed them???

  • Answer:

Be sure you do not let different species have contact. You have learned that, I hope. She will be able to take care of them. Keep an eye on her and feed her crushed hard boiled eggs with the shell on them. She will eat this and regurgitate it for the babies. Do you have Kaytee Exact Baby Bird Food? If so, look at the babies when the first hatched is about 4 days old - see that there is food in the crop. As long as there is, you do not need to hand feed them. You can hand feed from day one BUT no one wants to do that. Every half hour to feed? NO. Wait and let her do the task Nature made her for. She needs extra food beginning now.
