Robin Egg...What do I do to help it?

  • Well, I was walking to my friends house, and i found a Robin egg, laying in the wet cold Grass...I picked it up and warmed the Robin egg in my hands carefully, producing heat through my hands while walking back to my house...When I went to my house...I put the egg carefully into a bowl with a small baby blanket in the bowl and l set the egg on the blanket, and put a lamp over the bowl where it was directly on the egg but not too close to it...And the egg would get really warm, so I would flip the egg every 1 hour...Then If you got too warm. I woould take the egg out of the bowl and blow on it, and wrap in up in the baby blanket and hold it, for a while then put the egg back under the lamp...Am I doing the right thing? I mean I didnt steal the egg from the nest..I found it on the wet grass...Also what other things should I do to keep the egg alive?

I think its best to Keep doing what your doing. I can tell you care about it. the lamp is doing a fine job. You might not want to turn it too much if you think its not dead. The best thing to do is put it in an incubator or keep doing what your doing.

The egg was dead when you picked it up. Eggs that fall from nests are scrambled when they hit the ground. Even if they don't break open, it kills the baby. Cold kills babies. To hatch, eggs need the perfect temperature and perfect humidity levels. A lamp and a blanket don't cut it. Handling them also scrambles them. They have to be handled in a certain way or you break blood vessels, which kills the bird. Bacteria from your hands (and the ground) can get through the shell and kill the bird. Throw out the egg before it starts to stink. It's dead.
