I have noticed geese migrating sooner than normal... should we be worried of a bad winter? pls, give opinions?

It might as some have flown south over Okahoma. We have been pleasured with some hints of autumn after weeks of 100 degree temps. It is normal in the north to have temps drop 10 degrees on Labor Day then later some rain, a sudden cold snap and then up to mild temps for quite awhile. I thing the early cold snap happens to warm the critters of what is to come and to get them moving faster with preparations. Hummingbirds here have not changed their movements at all except for one that is body slamming another over feeder rights. the smoke from California fires might be getting some to move out of the way earlier since that smoke is traveling 1000 miles east now. They need good air for their strenulous flight, or else they can only fly relatively short distances at a spell and they might fly lower. That doesn't answer your question good enough, shucks.

I live in Saskatchewan, Canada; my house is directly under one of the major migration flyways and I have not seen a Canada Goose since the Spring. The geese that you are witnessing are probably geese that did not fly into the far North for the Summer. Little secret from Mother Nature - there are Canada geese that have never seen Canada.

A gardener friend has suggested this - because of the behaviour of certain plants and trees. After the lousy summer we have had, I could do with a good dollop of snow! Rarely get to use me 4 wheel drive system!!
