What should I do with the baby quails I found in my yard?
-
We found a whole nest of baby quails in the front yard today, and the mom flew away once we found them. She didn't come back for the whole day, and left her 15 or so babies abandoned in the bush. The babies started running everywhere, and didn't know what to do(the mom was still gone after about 5 hours). The baby quails were chirping so loud, that we decided 2 put them in my terrarium with a Infrared light to keep them warm, and fed them cat food that wuz soaked in water for 1 hour. They seem very happy and content. It wuz getting dark, so we put them back behind the bush were we found them, and they kept following us home! So now, they r in the terrarium with the infrared light on sleeping on a homemade nest. WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THE 4 OF THEM????

Answer:
Were you close to the babies all day..this may have kept the mother from coming back. Tomorrow...go ahead and release them where you found them, and give the mother a chance to come back and get them. You can watch from afar as if she sees you she will not come. Only if you are positive the mother is not returning, you need to get them to a local wildlife rehab: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

ring rsbp (if uk) or some wildlife rescue organisation, maybe they'll help. good luck
i'd say raise them and let them go when they're old enough to. once they can fly and have grown their feathers to survive. look up on the internet what kind of nutrition foods quails need. get a medicine dropper food thing so you can feed them even at wal mart they have a baby bird type feeder so u can drop it in their mouth. it's much easier because the mommy usually actually puts her beak over theirs and forces it down their throat they will need something different then cat food. so. keep them in the cage that you have. and. this sounds really gross i know but go on a search with the "we" (who ever you were with) for a bunch of worms. go inside (without telling your mom lol) and grind them up in the blender with a bit of water and if you have one of those dripper thingy majigers put it to their mouth. and like if you can, gently pull their face upward so their neck is straight up so the food with go right down their neck. they will know what you are doing and not turn away, because they will accept it.
just keep them in there. you can feed them budgie and canary seed, and make sure you give them some water, but in a very shallow dish so that they don't drown. when they get older (about 2 weeks old), you can move them to a bird cage, or you can sell them to a pet shop. they shouldn't need too much warmth because they hatch with baby feathers, unlike alot of other birds. :-)
