How to look after a baby sparrow?
-
My stupid cat has just brought in a baby sparrow in. I'm pretty sure I can see its parents calling down for it from my next door neighbours house but I can't see the nest. Do you think if I climbed up onto my own roof and made my own nest for the baby sparrow do you think the sparrows parents would come and take care of it? If not is there anyway I can take care of it until it's old enough to fly?

Leaving the bird unattended outside makes it an easy target for predators, and even if you could see the nest and reach it, it wouldn't be a good idea as the parents will reject her or worse, kill her. The best thing to do is take her inside, line a esky with a towel or two and fill a hot water bottle with hot water. Place the water bottle in the esky and cover with a towel. Also add a lamp in there too, place a towel over the bird and check it regularly, every hour. Go to the pet shop and buy a baby bird feeder, it will come in powder form and you must add water, but read the instructions first. Only feed the bird warm food, and make a new batch everytime, do not reuse leftovers. The bird will need to be fed every 2 hours, it will cry when it wants food. Use a syringe to feed it maybe, if you use a spoon be careful the food doesn't get cold. As the bird grows, the more the hours grow in between feeds. Just listen out for cries. But don't be upset if he dies as there is a good chance it will. Hey! Betteryet, you could take it to a wildlife carer, they are professionals and you won't have to worry about the bird...

The best thing to do is put it in view of parents on a safe surface (one it can't fall off) and out of reach of cats. Rearing it yourself is virtually impossible. Presumably the bird has fledged (left its nest) so it shouldn't need putting into a nest of any sort. If it hasn't fledged there is virtually no chance of survival. Good luck. Our cat caught one last week but ate most of it. Such a shame.
Once a baby bird has human scent on it, once you've picked it up, Momma bird won't have anything to do with it....It's all up to you now....Either dig a spot in your yard for worms, or go to your local bait shop and buy some...Tear them up into little bitty pieces (don't worry, worms don't have brains, so they can't feel pain) God Bless, and thankyou for rescuing the little guy before your cat got ahold of him....Been there, done that...
It's better to take it to an animal rescue centre like RSPCA or look for another animal rescue centre close to you.
Sorry mojos196..., most birds do not smell anything well enough to get human scent. Put it up off the ground and the parents will care for it if you are not in their sight. They always care for babies that leave the nest before they can fly.
Put the bird somewhere out of the sun, perhaps on the grass, under a bush or somewhere safe. The parents hopefully will return. If they have not returned in a couple of hours, look online or somewhere for RSPCA or other animal shelter. Keep the cat in whilst you do all this!
