When will my budgie/parakeet lay an egg?

Will my love birds lay egg?

  • I have 4 lovebirds in one cage. 2 are male and the other 2 are female. Will they lay eggs? and if they lay egg, will the male lovebirds harm the egg? Some people say that i have to keep 2 lovebirds ( 1 male and 1 female) in one cage, only then they will lay egg, if i keep more then that, then they will not lay egg. is it true?

  • Answer:

The birds need to be a bonded pair to mate. Two random birds will not mate. They need to be in a calm, clean environment to consider babies. I would separate the pairs, as this might make things a bit more calm for them. Put a nest box and toys in each cage to keep them stimulated. You should read more about baby birds before you do this, though, in case anything happens like you need to hand feed the babies, etc. and what to put in the next box. A lot of first time moms and some dads will try to harm the baby birds, so I would keep an eye on them. If they do seem to be bullying their babies, that means you would need to pull the babies out of the nest box and hand feed them yourself.
