When will my budgie/parakeet lay an egg?

Why does my red earred slider only lay one egg? I have to red earred sliders. One is a male and one is a femal?

  • I have to red earred sliders. One is a male and one is a female. When I saw the egg I went to go grab a box full of soil to put the egg in. When I came back my boy turtle was eating the egg. Is this unhealthy for the boy turtle? In the past my girl turtle has only layed one egg. Every time an egg is layed it is eaten by my boy turtle..... why is this? When will my turtle lay another egg? (By the way the single egg was fertile.)

  • Answer:

Hi! It is not unheard of for a female to lay just one egg especially if she is small and the conditions aren't ideal. Do you have a good nesting area for her? If you want her to have a successful clutch and you are prepared to have hatchlings, then do some more research on breeding. Hope that helps.

As a general rule, the younger and smaller the turtle, the fewer eggs it lays. Try to rig something like the Turtle Topper to give the female easy access to a large container of barely damp sand or potting soil.

Turtles and tortoises are carnivores, they need to be to survive, why only one egg? Who's knows the answer to that? And no the egg will not hurt the RES who's eating it.
