What is wrong with my Bearded Dragon?

What's wrong with my bearded dragon?

  • I have a male juvenile bearded dragon "spikes" and he was be fine but sometimes out of no where his bearded turn pitch black for like a minute and then his back to his color. is there something wrong with him. i don't have a female dragon and when his like this i don't think his mad because i put my hand in his tank when his like that and he doesn't put up his spikes or anything. why is he turning black?

  • Answer:

its normal for dragons to turn their beards black. males AND females do it. like mine, he could be seeing his reflection in the glass of his tank, and think its another dragon. he prob wont go after your hand because hes familar with you, and is distracted by the "other" beardie he thinks is there. alot of ppl also say its a sign that he wants to breed. my 8 month old beardie will puff his beard up, head bob, turn black..and then try to get at his reflection LOL

As they discover their beards, they sort of play with them if you will by turning them black and or poofing them out. Over time we have discovered that all three of ours use theirs to signal their displeasure at something. Sometimes it's the cat walking by their tanks or the contents of their food dish. As long as it's not black all the time for days on end it's nothing to worry about.
