How can I become a dirt biker/motocross?

My turtle keeps eating the dirt in the nest I made her?

  • I already asked how I can get my turtle to lay her eggs, but now that I have everything ready.. She still just lays there and eats the dirt. She seemed to have been choking on the dirt so I put her back in her tank to swallow with water, but now I don't know what to do, let her slowly become egg bound.. Or wait for her to lay the eggs but risk her choking to death. She's a red eared slider; 10years old

    I have a russian tortoise, and i keep her (Xhena) in a XXLarge box with turtle pellets as ground cover. These pellets also serve as food... so no worry on eating dirt and choking etc.

I also have a 12 year old red ear and she's been on the move for the past week. We have a pond in our backyard that she lives in and when she gets ready to lay her eggs she just gets out, searches for a nice spot, and starts digging. this process can take a couple weeks before she's satisfied. If you keep your turtle in a tank indoors, im not sure how she's going to lay eggs because they make their own nests and she may not appreciate being stuck in a dirt hole... If she's eating the dirt she could be hungry so i would suggest putting some earth worms or other bugs for her to eat. As for getting her to lay eggs, you can't. you just have to let her do her thing. But my Poppy has been laying her eggs for 10 years now and we've only had one successful time and only one of them survived. It takes a lot of patience and you can't force it, but good luck! And if she is actually chocking, I would take her out of the dirt.

Sounds like a trip to the vet for a shot of oxytocin is in order.
