How do I know whether my ball python is pregnant?

How do I know when to feed my ball python bigger mice?

  • I bought a baby (12-14") ball python about 10 months ago and have been feeding it one frozen fuzzy mouse per week. However, lately he seems to be hungry much sooner than his week is up. Should I be giving him the next size bigger mouse? How do I know if it would be too much for him to handle?

  • Answer:

I start hatchling ball pythons on hopper mice, so a fuzzy mouse is by far too small. You should be feeding it a meal that leaves a noticeable lump. By 10 months of age, I'm usually feeding them at least rat pups, if not something larger.

You're snake will most likely surprise you as to the meal size he can eat. However if he looks like he is roaming around looking for more food after you feed him that's a good hint. Also the meal item should be about 1.25 times the girth of him.

I quick rule of thumb is that the food should be no bigger than the length of the snakes head. So just get bigger notice as his head grows.

You can use a simple guideline to determine if you are feeding your snake the right sized prey. Prey should be about equal the size of your snake's mid section at it's widest point. Try offering your snake hopper mice.
