What are snake eggs supposed to look like after 24 hours?
-
My corn snake laid a couple eggs 24 hours ago, so I put them in a home made incubator (7 or 8 hours ago), put heating pad under there and put it back in the original cage with a small heat lamp above it. (I also put some water in the material to make it moist, and I did not put water directly on the eggs). As of right now they look kind of dry. They are still kind of white, but they have the slightest hint of yellow. My question is: Is this normal? What should they look like after 24 hours? And lastly, if they do end up dying, is it a big deal? I eventually want to have more eggs (i recently put a male snake in the cage), and I am wondering if there is going to be another chance for them to mate. And if they do mate, how soon will it be? Please please please answer all my questions. Thanks

Answer:
Why are you using a heat pad and a heat lamp? Are you trying to cook them? A heat lamp will dry your eggs out and kill them. I incubate corn snake eggs at 80 to 82 degrees and 100% humidity. A female can lay a second clutch of eggs but only is she is in good health and has plenty of body weight.

some do go slightly yellow at times yes as this is just the embryo inside developing etc so yes i would say this is normal. however if they go really yellow/browny then this often means they are dead but sometimes this isn't always the case. if they look dry then mist them. if they die then they die nothing can be done at this point but just keep the temperature correct and make sure its moist and things should be ok. my female mated and i didn't think it did so i put the male back in a couple of weeks later and theyn she laid her eggs but in the mean time i seen them mate again before she laid her eggs, then i incubated the eggs etc and she was feeding every two days and then a month or so later she had more eggs...it says on the internet that snakes can hold two batches of eggs and this is what hap pend in my case as the second batch are now incubating and the 16 hatchlings are doing great
if they are yellow looking and feel hard chances are they are no good. I have answered this question a few times earlier today. Good eggs look white and are soft and kinda leathery. Cornsnake eggs do NOT need to be heated unless your house is really cold, and they most definitely do not need light. Just because she laid eggs does not mean they are good viable eggs. Place them in some vermiculite and perlite mixture in a shoebox sized sterilite or rubbermaid container with just enough water to just moisten the mixture place the eggs in the box. Put the box on a shelf somewhere where it stays between 78-84 degrees. No colder, no warmer, do not mess with the eggs again. wait 55-60 days and if they are good you will start to see baby snakes appear. If you keep messin with them, then they for sure will be no good. And as far as placing the male back in with the female, that is a mistake. She just laid eggs! What would make you think she is ready to breed again? she needs to gain back 20 % of her body weight and fat so she can ovulate again without it killing her. She will need to eat at least 8 times, good sized meals before she will be ready again. You cannot and should not try to force the issue of breeding unless you dont like your snake. They should do it only once a year.
