What is the best dog food that I could feed my dog?
-
My dog Rocky is a mixed breed (Chow-chow and lab, I think) and for the longest time we fed him Pedigree. We were recently told by a friend that Pedigree is one of the worst foods out there, so we started feeding him Beneful. My dog loves it (It kinda smells like pizza to me, lol xD) but I know it's also a very bad dog food, since it also has by-products and stuff like that :( I've been thinking about feeding him Blue Buffalo dog food. Before I asked this question I did quite a bit of lurking on YA. Some people said that Blue Buffalo is decent, some said it's horrible (That it gave their dog diarrhea and things like that), and some said it's a great dog food. I want to see what kind of answers I'll get, so please give me your opinions! :D I know that every dog is not the same, and some will react differently to different brands, but my dog has never had any trouble with the brands he eats. We've only given him Pedigree, Beneful, and Ol'Roy (Horrible, I know). In case this helps, he's either 4 or 5 years old right now, I can't remember x'DD Thanks in advance~ :)

I use Blue for my two dogs and they've done well on it. I haven't had any problems. My Jack Russell picks out the black pieces, he prefers not to eat those, but he will if I tell him. But my mutt puppy picks them up for him. My Jack is a senior so he eats the senior, and I have a young dog who started on the puppy formula and then went to the adult. I haven't had any problems, and they eat less of the Blue than they do of other food. I do still get them the Beneful canned food for a once a week treat, I tried the Blue canned but they didn't seem that excited about it.
blue buffalo, wellness, nutro ultra and nature's recipe what ever your vet says your dog looks good on
I suggest Honest Kitchen dehydrated raw food. I've only bought it yesterday after a recommendation here, and it has started to improve my puppy's appetite and health. It is made out of human grade ingredients, then dehydrated to preserve the freshness. You only need to add warm water, and it starts to smell like real food! I bought Honest Kitchen's Force, and it has a good amount of vegetables and meat. It's a balanced meal, and you can mix it with kibble too. If you don't want to start on raw food, this is an easier step. You buy a 4lb box for $44, and it makes 16lbs of raw food. Pretty worth it. She eats it all up and licks the bowl clean. Makes her poops firm instead of soft, and she doesn't fart anymore. Lol XD You can read the testimonials on honestkitchen.com if you don't believe me :)
All dog foods are formulated to the same standards. The only real difference is some charge inflated prices for marginally more expensive ingredients that sound better to the poorly informed. Dogs need certain amino acids, see http://www.fda.gov/AnimalVeterinary/ResourcesforYou/ucm047120.htm They can come from many different sources depending on how they are processed. If your dog is doing well on Beneful now, I see no reason to change to a more expensive one. Most dogs will thrive on most foods, but no one diet is right for all dogs. You have your dog on a food that is working? Leave well enough alone. Pedigree and Old Roy were so terrible? What problems do you remember? The same people bashing Beneful bash them. Are you going to go by what you have seen or what a bunch of strangers of no known qualifications or agenda say? Have any of them provided any objective proof the common foods are bad?
There are as many opinions out there as there are dog owners. The only thing I can tell you is that Blue Buffalo is a big step up from the other three brands you listed. If you do switch, transition your dog over slowly, over about two weeks, gradually increasing the amount of the new food. Also in general, foods that list meat as the first ingredient and don't have byproducts, corn, wheat and artificial ingredients will be far better. I have two dogs and feed two different foods - some dogs do better on some foods, some do better on others.
Go into Amazon and look at the different reviews for the dog food they sell there it should be very helpful. Plus learn to read the packaging and see what is in the food. The first item listed is the main ingredient.
Well the first thing is not all by-product is created equal so you need to look into the difference between good and bad by-product. Second thing is each dog is different. You should try the different foods until you find one that both you and your dog are happy with. If you have any doubts your vet would be a good source. Also you could, with the right research feed a home-made diet which would be fine yet I have heard they can get expensive. Also, you are right. Never feed your dogs Ol'Roy. If there is one thing I learned so far in school it's that lol The important thing to remember is that dogs are individuals, like us. Some of us are allergic to foods while others are not. It's basically the same thing so one dog might get diarrhea and the other dog may not.
I had all of my dogs at one point on Blue Buffalo, but that changed about 6 months ago when they all started getting horribly sick on it(Diarrhea, lethargy, skin infections, intestinal infections severe allergies increased water intake weight loss)(sorry about there not being any comma's Y!A is having a glitch)I thought it was just my dogs that were having issues with it but several of my colleagues who feed it also started having similar issues.Which is why I do not recommend it anymore. If you give me a few moments I will post a helpful site for you:) Heres the site I was speaking of,it has a list of the best dog food brands you can feed your dog, they also have a whole array of other very good info about dog food's. http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/best-dog-foods/best-dry-dog-foods/
