What is the best remedy for dog skin allergies?
-
I just rescued a beautiful pit bull boy. The man who owned him before left him outside 24/7 with no shelter, and this was during the winter in chicago. He also said that he couldn't afford to feed him anymore and was feeding him table scraps. So when I finally was able to take him from him, I noticed that something wasn't right about the dog. After a vet Visit and research I found out that he was allergic to grass, as our many pit bulls. It also turns out that because he was left outside all of the time he got an ear infections and he was so bad that when I took him to the vet I was informed that I would have to clean his ears 2 times a week because the infection will never completely go away. Anyways I am giving him a oatmeal medicated bath once a week, and giving him allergy medicine from petco. He is much better than what he was but he still is itching his eyes and chewing on his paws. I try to stop him from itching his eyes because the hair on his eyes is starting to come off. I read about salmon oil and giving that to him but with how severe his allergies are I don't know what will work and what won't. I was just told that the people that breed him had another breeding with the same two dogs and had to put a puppy to sleep because it's allergies were to bad. So please if anyone can tell me what to try it will be much appreciated. I

Answer:
After letting him out, wipe his feet & face with a clean wet cloth. This will remove the grass oils from those areas that are most affected. Some owners even purchase boots to have the dog wear when they go out. Be sure that you rinse the cloth thoroughly after using it on him so it will be ready to use the next time he goes out. You may want to give him some Benadryl to see if that may relieve his itching. Use a mixture of white vinegar & water (50/50) to clean his ears and keep the infection in check. Good luck and thank you for saving this sweetie from a life of hell!!

Other than keeping him off the grass which i believe will be hard, try Septiderm-V Skin Care Bath and the Skin Care Lotion, you're already using the oatmeal products which is good. Here's a site that can help without the strong chemicals and drugs (see below)

Allergy medicine from Petco? Is this where the vet's office is?? Did the vet not put him on pills/meds. or give him a shot? Was a skin scrape performed? Just wondering... how the vet found out your dog is allergic to grass?? What did the vet suggest??

Thank you for rescuing that doggie! I strongly advise you to see your vet about your dog's issues. You stand to make things much worse if you don't seek the guidance of a professional. Good luck!

It's very much worth it to try raw diet for a few weeks. My friends and I recently switched after one of the supposedly "premium" foods changed their ingredients without notification. Sad dogs! Two of our dogs are over ten years old and are again frisky and interested in food, no more itchy skin, less arthritis, coats look fresh and clean much longer. It costs about about $1.25- $1.75 a day for my 80 lb shepherd cross. There's plenty of info online on what you need to make it. Watch out: many pitties are allergic to beef.

first off you should not give your dog a bath that often. Allergies or not, Medicated shampoo or not, it strips their coat and skin of oils that they need. I would avoid bathing him more than once a month if possible. I would ask your vet if they can see if he is allergic to anything besides the grass. Some dogs are allergic to potato, wheat, or even chicken. I don't undrestand why the people you got him from are breeding. Frankly, it pisses me off that they are breeding dogs that they have no interest in caring for. I hope you call animal cruelty on them for negligence. You can't leave pits outside in winter weather like that. Fish oil is something worth trying for your dog. I use jojoba oil on my dogs nose when it gets dried out but i don't think that is allergy related. Best of luck.

Sadly there is no over the counter/home remedy for his allergies, only treatments for his symptoms. There are Hydro cortisone creams, ointments, lotions, and sprays made specifically for dogs. (they require a different lower percentage than whats found in the human version of the med). There are "hot spot" sprays and lotions containing tea tree oil, aloe, and other soothing natural ingredients. You could give him a doggie dose of human benedryl, just call a vet for the proper dosage. Benedryl will cause drowsiness for a while, but that side effect will wear off with continued use. Oatmeal shampoos are very helpful, but don't bathe him more than once a month. You can dry out and irritate his skin even more by over bathing. You could protect his feet from the grass by getting some doggie booties to wear out on potty breaks, he will not like these at first, but he'll get used to them. Bitter Apple spray on the booties will keep him from trying to remove them. Salmon oil is an excellent supplement, try switching his food to a salmon formula as well. Purina Pro Plan has a salmon formula you can find it in some grocery stores, Petsmart, and probably Petco. If you have to, bandage his paws and put an e-collar ("the cone, or lampshade") on him to give his skin a chance to heal and let the fur grow back.

First off, dont bathe him that often. It only adds to skin issues. One of my pits has skin issues and I add fish oil pills to his diet, 1 pill per 10lbs of body weight, made a huge difference in his skin and coat, however your boy sounds pretty bad so I dont know how effective it would be, it certantly wont hurt any. If he is itching his eyes and paws so much ask the vet what you can do about that. I would also recommend putting him on a high quality food (if he isnt already) such as Blue Buffalo, Wellness, Evo, Innova, etc....
