My dad is being so selfish and spiteful how can he get rid of our dog because of this!?
-
My dog nipped someone and my dog is a 10month stafforshire terrier now although my dad knows how much the dogs means to us hes saying he wants to get rid of it. Now were not intially sure he nipped somone it may have just been a scratch. He said he wants to get rid of it because it roams around the house then we said we'd by him a dog house so he'd stay outside eventhough im against dogs staying outside i cant bear to loose him. Then he completely changed his story and said that its because the dog nipped someone so we said he wil always be muzzled. Then he changed his story again and said its because he will get a criminal record then my mum butted in a said no he wont because the dog isnt vicious and hes blowing it out of proportion my mum and dad have split up but my mum was just visiting, Then he said i just cant keep a dog and he doesnt want to go to court for the dog, then my mum said okay then i'll take the dog and keep him at my house just so the kids wont loose him because her dog died when she was younger and she never fully got over it so she doesnt want us to feel that way. Remember this suggestion from my mum means he cuts all strings in relation to the dog and the dog is gone and plus he doesnt have to go to court all he wanted all along. And he said he'll think about it!!! Hes so selfish its unbelievable hes so single minded he doesnt care about our feelings at all hes just being spiteful to my older brother im 15. He just admited that the only reason the dog isnt coming back is because of his attitude hes 18. My brother isnt even rude to him he just doesnt like him i think what hes doing is so selfish yesterday he said to us that hes got rid of it and me and my younger brother were crying our eyes out all night and you no what he came in to our room and looked at us and left he didnt even comfort us or say anything its was like so cold and heartless. Were always playing with it all the time he knows how much we love it and hes still going to do it regardless of our feelings. I don't want him to get rid of it because im scared are relationship will deteriorate its like everytime ill look at him the dog will be at the back of my mind and it just wont be the same. What do you think about him do you think hes spiteful or do you agree with him. What should i do because i dont want to have a bad relationship with him but if he gets rid of it i wont be talk to him ill just be so inraged and angry at him and i dont want that. So what should i do and whats your opinion of him. P.S for those who may be thinking "its just a dog" imagine if someone close was taken away from you if you dont have a dog you wont understand.

Answer:
I'd have a family meeting. The obedience lessons suggestion is good. However, your father also needs to understand he is hurting the whole family and using the dog as a way to do that. Tell him that you all keep hearing a different story each time. If it were the matter of the dog nipping someone, that's one thing. However, hurting everyone just to get back at your older brother is really mean. Hope your father wises up. Otherwise he's going to alienate all his children with his habits.

I believe there are times when adults decide to do things without giving clear understandable reasons to their children. While I don't agree that your father should "get rid of" the dog - he is still your father and allowing this to determine your future relationship with your father is not in your best interests. Shortly after I went off to college my parents euthanized my dog. They didn't discuss it with me and it was a decision they made at a very bad time in their lives. They admitted at a later point that they should have discussed it with me and offered me the option of finding the dog another home - but mentally, they simply were not able to see that as an option at that time. If I went through life hating them for that one mistake - we would ALL be the worse for it.
Sorry...cant help you...i have a dog and i would hate it if she was taken away...but thats life...and hes the one that would be paying if someone got really hurt...and its his house
how about offering to accompany the dog to obedience classes? obedience and training with someone who is experienced with nippy dogs is ALWAYS my first response to a situation like this. it's not fair to get rid of him- the dog may not even know it was wrong, and it's not fair to pass the problem along to someone else. so even if he wants to give the dog up, he should still agree to training first!
keeeep the doggg. i have a staffie and i would never give him up. yours is still young.. (mine is 11 months) so a little nip is nothing, but you MUST train your dog vigorously if you want to make sure this never happens again (the victim+court won't be forgiving due to his breed). You just need to prove to your dad that your dog is trainable (they're really smart) and YOU must make sure you control your dog when others are around. It'd be worse if your dog has to be put asleep bc it mauled a dog or person. So you must prove to your father that you have your dog under control. Staffie's can be STUBBORN.. so you have to be persistent about training it! Or else, keep it on a leash when other people are around!
