My St Bernard has torn ligaments in both knees, and I can't afford the surgery. Is there anything to help?
-
My friends own a St Bernard, and because their father passed away two years ago, they are financially tight. There is a surgery to repair the torn ligaments, but the vet seemed to indicate that sometimes it doesn't work. Is this a usual problem in St Bernards, and is there a recognized probability of success? Also, as the surgery is about two grand per knee, and though friends may be able to provide some money, that may not be entirely feasible. Is there any form of financial aid available? I know there's no such thing as a free surgery, but foundations, organizations, clinics-- is there anything set up to alleviate some of the cost for those who can't really afford it? Thanks

Don't usually respond to other answers but PETA really? Get a clue. PETA would turn the dog lose in the woods to fend for itself. Have you checked out warm water Canine therapy pools in your area. It might help.
Contact "Actors and others for animals!" They are located in Los Angeles California and help people with medical expenses. Until then lots of rest, ask your vet if she can take aspirin and maybe mix some MSM in her food! Good Luck and hope pooch is better soon!*:*
I have to say - my dog had a foxtail up his snout and I had to cough up $1500 in expenses getting that thing out. No expense would be too great to help my dog if he's suffering. That said, I understand if every sacrifice has been made and they still cannot pay for the surgery, then I suggest calling pet insurance signing up for it - many do not require a check-up. After the foxtail incident I signed up for PetPlan (I'm not a shill, I do NOT work for PetPlan, this is not SPAM) and they signed up my dog no questions asked. Based on my experience I'd think that you could sign up for a similar plan with whatever deductible you're comfortable with of the several options (I think I have a $200 deductible and the annual is reasonable - the more the deductible, the less the annual). Once signed up, you could get the dog's legs fixed and pay only the deductible. That's my best suggestion - hope it works. Poor pup. :(
My dog tore her ligamnet in knee when she was 5 yrs old (now 12) I too did not have alot of money! I called all the area vets and got the lowest price of $1200.00. I went ahead and had the surgery and one year to the day later, her other knee blew! went back to the same vet and asked if there was a 2 for 1 discount. They did do it cheaper but not much! Both surgerys were a success but she has artheritis now and that is unavoidable. The only place I know of that will help you out is if there is a vetrenary school in your area. I think they need patience to practice on so they discount it. Unfortunately there was none near me. Call your local ASPCA and see if they have a lead for you. Good luck
if your friends really loved that dog they would pay for it, sacrifice something or get a second job. i know i would if that was my dog
How about take the dog to the vet have it put down then buy a nice coffin and bury the dog.
PETA doesn't give a s&it about your pet, go to petakillsanimals.com if you don't believe me.. Unfortunately, torn knee ligaments (ACL and CCL) are common in large and giant breed dogs. You might try contacting a st bernard rescue group to see if they have some kind of foundation, etc, but most likely you are going to be out of luck. The surgeries are expensive, but have a pretty high success rate. However, it is not something your dog NEEDS. He will not die if he does not get this surgery. If you choose, or cannot afford $4000 (which I could not, I am certainly not judging!!) he will eventually be able to compensate for his knees. Keep him on th slender side. Lots of long slow walks. They will always be weak, but as time passes they will not hurt as much and he will return to the dog you knew before this happened. Good luck!
