Puppy Urinary Tract Infection?
-
Hi. So, my puppy has a UTI - I took her to the vet on Tuesday (its now sunday, we noticed the infection on Monday evening) and she got an antibiotic shot and some tablets. She hasn't had the symptoms over the past few days (the straining, frequent urination with little result) but when I just took her out she stretched out on her belly after she weed and I noticed a lingering drop of cloudy, very pale yellow urine. Is this a problem or could it be a result of the medication? I haven't noticed her drinking any thing other than the puppy milk i give her, but the water bowl is up the other end of the house and she doesn't seem dehydrated. I cant go off the water level of the bowl as we have another dog (American Staffy), but, like i said, she doesn't seem dehydrated. I feed her pedigree puppy food (I know its not the best, but its what we can afford and our other dog was fine eating it when she was a pup) and sometimes scraps of my food. I'm so worried about her because my cat passed away from crystals in his bladder at Christmas - I know it's not the same, and nowhere near as severe with my puppy but I can't help but worry. Layla, my puppy is an English staffy an she is 12 weeks old. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Answer:
Your puppy will be fine. Just make sure you give her the entire course of antibiotics. She doesn't really need milk any longer at 12 weeks of age, and milk does interfere with some antibiotics so you might want to check with your vet on that. Also, once she completes the antibiotics give her plain, unflavored yogurt to rebuild the good bacteria in her system. To encourage more water drinking you can add a bit of salt-free broth to the water. The other dog will enjoy it also. As far as the food goes, if you live in the U.S. and your family are CostCo members, check into their Kirkland brand dog food. It'll cost about the same or less than Pedigree but is a much healthier food. Hi UTIs are pretty common and easily treated with antibiotics so just go through the full course as recommended by the vet. To encourage drinking, try mixing broth or water in the kibble! That way while feeding, liquid is ingested as well. This will encourage urination and the expelling of the bacteria causing the UTI. If your dog is ammendable, you can add some cider vinegar or feed some citrus fruits. The acidity will make the dog's urinary track unfriendly to bacteria, helping rid of the infection.
