Do you use a doggy daycare? Are they necessary?
-
I work full time and we just got a dog for the kids. My neighbour told me she cries sometimes while we're at work and she said a doggy daycare would be good for her. But I checked into it and they're like $20-$30 a day! Is it really necessary and what do they actually do there?

I have bitten the bullet twice ... and coughed up the money and sent my boy. He absolutely, 100% LOVED it! On 'school' mornings, i'd pack his lunch and ask he "do you want to go to school?" and he would get sooo excited and go nuts. And when we got there, he would pace and whine and cry just DYING to get out of the car. So, his excitement and exhuberant happiness made it worth it to spend $25/day (I only sent him once/week ... because of the cost.) The ones that he attended, had an initial temperment test. The first half of the test, I was there and then he was given a "try-out" day (or half a day). The places that I sent him, did not kennel them at all, but separated them based on size/play style. My dog, a rottweiler, really enjoyed spending time with the little dogs and I was told that he was allowed to spend time with the little dogs because that was his preference. One of the two places gave would give them their lunch in a crate during a 90min. "nap-time". The dogs pretty much spend their daytime playing and running around and spashing in the wading pools just having a wonderful time. And, when I'd pick him up in the evening he would sleep for the next consecutive entire 2 days! (ie. GREAT way for a puppy to burn off the extra energy.) Also, be prepared for your dog to have sore-paws ... that happened to him from time to time. Before you decide for or against doggy day care, you should stop by the daycare place and check it out. And, of course, you can always look for a reputable dog walker (start by asking your vet or groomer) to stop by during the day-time to check on your pup. Or maybe you could ask your neighbor to stop by and check on the new puppy.

I think you should visit the dog day care and see what is done at the center and ask questions. Like what is included in the service package some included grooming. Walks and It also socializes the dog.
I've taken my dog to them on occasion and he's had a great time. The one I go to has several large dog areas where they let all the dogs get together for play dates and to run around and play. They then give them some down time and then more play time. It keeps the dogs active and socialized so they aren't bored during the day and get into trouble. They are a great way to help socialize your dog and to give them exercise.
sounds like a scam!!!
I've never used a doggy daycare. Once I had a beloved dog who was perfectly behaved when we were home. However, when we left the home, it was a crapshoot as to whether Patches would be okay or if she would become the "dog from H-E-double hockey sticks" and tear up the door! She would have been a good candidate for doggy daycare! If Poochie just cries a bit while you are gone, I don't think you need to worry. Just give her extra love and attention when you get home. If she is tearing up the place while you are gone, then doggy daycare might be the answer.
I don't think so, i don't use one. They don't do much, besides kennel them and give them potty breaks depending on which one you use, But good luck with whatever you decide to do.
How long is your dog home alone? Over 8 hours and I would recommend doggy day care. That way your dog will actually get some socialization, and be taken care of. Personally I have never used it because my dogs were never left alone for more than 6 hours when they were pups.
It isn't necessary for all dogs. Depends on the dog and how long you all are gone. You may want to consider a pet sitter. They could come around lunch time and spend about 45 minutes with her...walk her, play with her, etc. My pet sitter charges $12 per visit.
The doggie day camp here is also $25/day, but you can get coupon books with more days for a discount (like 20 days for $330). They go out and play with other dogs all morning outside with swimming pools and toys, come in for a nap, and then go out and play again until you show up. It's good to be with other dogs, especially for puppies. You don't have to do it every day, just as often as you want to pay for. I'd look for a service that stops by the house once and walks the dog. They can wear out the dog in 30 minutes so she sleeps the rest of the day. I've paid $10-$15/day for this with different services. I did this three days a week when I first got my dog, who was 8 years old. People with puppies often have a walker come every day.
No, it is not necessary but it would be a great idea to have someone take her for a nice long walk while you're gone.
