Why do my dogs eat their poop?

  • Both of my dogs eat their poop all the time. One has always done it, and now the other one has picked up the habit, too. I heard to feed them pineapple with their food, but I've been doing that for a week and they're still eating it. It's the first thing they do when they go outside is to run over to a pile. I knock on the window and tell them no but they will run right back over to it. It's soo gross!! How can I stop them??

    This is one I actually really know about. I know you may not have seen me on here a lot and I answer questions to get points so I can ask questions about my new pup I found in the garbage can. XD Every two points helps. And your question I actually really know the answer to cause my dog I had for 18 years did that and I asked the vet about it. He told me that this is a left over trait from when dogs were in the wild. It is more an instinct than anything else. They eat it so larger animals that would harm them cannot find their pack. Now I know that is hard to get, and I know it is gross. Here is what I did. I got me one of these things called a popper grabber. I was never found of the scoopers. This actually will pick it up without you coming into contact with it, and I would dig a small hole nad drop it in and cover it. It actually fertilized my lawn too so it was good on all counts. I don't know why, but after Bubba saw me doing that after about a month or so, he actually started kicking to cover it him self. I know its gross and especially when they want to come and give you kisses after. That is how I got introduced to a dogs toothbrush and paste. Cause Bubba was gonna kiss me. and you are right...sooo gross.

Clean up after your dogs immediately. If pineapple's not doing the trick, there's a powder you can get from your vet to sprinkle on their food.

The reason why a lot of dogs eat their poop is because they are looking for extra nutrition. What kind of food do you feed? If it is a commercial brand like, Iams, Science Diet, Pedigree, etc... you need to switch because these foods contain too many grains, fillers, additives, & presertives. Some high quality, grain-free kibbles are Innova, Merrick, Canidae, Chicken Soup, Blue Buffalo, Harvest Legacy, Taste of the Wild.... But... the absolute best diet for your dog is raw. It takes some time, effort, & research but the benefits are enormous. One more thing, why don't you just pick the poop up every time they go? Then you wouldn't have this problem in the first place.

You can by stuff to sprinkle on their food and it taste good when they eat it but not when it comes out. It has worked for my dogs. Ask someone at a local pet store, or a vet.

There is something you can get at the store called Adolph's Meat Tenderizer. Sprinkle it over their food. It tasted good going in, but bad coming out. This is what the vet told my mom to do for her stupid little poodle.

Sometimes they do it because they're not getting enough nutrients in their food. Try changing his food and scold him when he does eat it.

That's pretty gross. Maybe they really like their dog food and they're trying to experience it for a second time. I usually walk my dog on a leash, even in the backyard and I pick up the poop as soon as she goes. I only let her go in one area of the yard and I pick it up right away. They won't eat it if it isn't there.

They do that because they smell nutrients in the feces. What is your dogs eating? I have a cocker spaniel who did that growing up. I had to change his food to Science Diet and also stand with him when he was outside to make sure he wasn't eating it. How old are your dogs? If they have been doing this enough to make it a habit, you may need to break that habit and train them again in that department. Technically eating feces is no different then eating grass and dirt, but it will make there breath unbearable. Hope I helped. (P.S. my dog hates his teeth brushed, so everytime he ate poop I brushed his teeth)
