why do dogs bark?

Answer:
Not all dogs bark. Mine doesn't at all. A lot of dogs can be trained not to. Most dogs bark to ward off strangers, alert you of someone's presence, or to protect their territory. Sometimes dogs bark to get your attention, when they're playing or to protest you. Sometimes dogs also bark because they're bored.

Barking is a dog's way of communicating with the world. It's just like talking for humans. They bark when they feel threatened, when they are protecting something, when they are happy, when they want someone's attention, to let their owner's know of something, etc.
Why do people talk?
"The basenji is a dog breed that isn't able to bark, naturally, from birth." Read more: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Do_all_dogs_howl_or_bark#ixzz1YXmmv9fn I'm not sure if that is the answer.
It's a form of communication just like humans talking. That's part of the picture in communication. Both species also use expression, posture, body language and vocal tone, timber and volume. Barking can convey anything from, "Hey, SQUIRREL!!", to "I'm going to rip your throat out!", to, "Oh my God, I LOVE YOU!". It's like using your "outdoor voice" because Adrenalin is flowing and you're excited. It's punctuation to the other forms of communication. Dogs can vary in barking from individual to individual. One breed doesn't bark at all. I had a Rottie who lived nearly 12 years and barked probably less than 10 times. She was a quiet girl. Just like some people, some are chatter-boxes and some rather quiet.
Dogs bark, not talk, because of the way their throat's vocal chords are. They usually bark to talk to other dogs, to tell you they want something, orif they hear another dog bark, in return they will bark. But sometimes dogs have their vochal chords clipped so they can't bark.
because they cant meow not all dogs bark.. the basenji cant bark- he yodels and howls tho.
Not all dogs bark. For example, Basenji's cannot bark, but they do make this terrible howling noise that makes it sound like they are dying. And some dogs aren't as noisy as others. But its how dogs communicate. I don't think dogs can communicate directly by words like people, but their barks can show their mood to people and animals alike.
The same reason people talk and cats meow. Its the sound they make.
It's a natural wolf trait. Dogs bark to get the others attention. Possibly because of an intruder that they see threatening, or when playing around with other members(you) of the pack.
