Can dogs have allergies?

I have allergies to dogs :( Can I still get a dog or does it depend?

  • I have allergies to dogs and cats:( And I was wondering if I bought a dog do you think Id be ok around the dog Because I really really want one Thanks again

  • Answer:

Just because you want a dog doesn't mean that you would be ok around it. You need to be around the dog that you want BEFORE you get it to see if you get allergic reactions. I have allergies to dogs too but only some dogs and I'm fine with mine even though he is not the "Hypoallergenic' kind. By every standard I should be allergic to my dog but I'm not and yet I get allergic reactions to many so called hypoallergenic dogs.

There are several low allergy dogs, but there is no such thing as a "hypoallergenic" dog. Here's a list: http://allergies.about.com/od/animalandpetallergy/tp/hypoaller_dog.htm

It depends on how severe your allergy is. I am allergic to cats and have a cat. Once I got her I developed allergy-induced asthma. I am now undergoing allergy shots and am on daily allergy medication. I would not give her up for anything! :) There are several breeds of dogs that produce less dander and shed less. These dogs are dubbed "hypoallergenic." However, there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. These breeds are just less likely to provoke an allergic reaction. I would go have allergy testing done by an allergist to see how severe your dog allergy is. Then, if you decide you want one, they can provide you with some good medication to help control your symptoms and possibly give you allergy shots. Before you get a dog, spend some adequate time around it to see if you have a reaction.

Just becareful of people who advertise "hypoallergenic" breeds. There is no completely hypoallergenic breeds. there are breeds that some people with allergies are ok with. It depends on what you are allergic to (dander, salvia, etc) and the breed. If you aren't allergic to Poodles becareful with "poo" or "doodles". just because they are mixed with Poodle does not mean they will be ok for you. It is a random chance they will inherit the correct traits to be "hypoallergenic". The majority don't. There are many of these mixes in shelters because people believed they would be and turned out not to be. http://labradoodles.wordpress.com/2007/09/07/labradoodle-design-by-wally-conron/

Some breeds of dogs have hair instead of fur, which is the main reason for allergies to dogs. So if you got one of those kinds of dogs, your allergies shouldn't be a problem.

they sell hypo-allergenic dogs out there and you should be fine with getting one of these. Good lUck !

My sister has allergies too. But we have a Mini Schnauzer, and he doesn't bother her at all.

Same here! Thing is it depends how bad your allergies are. Mine aren't really that bad, just an itchy eye and stuff. But whenever I go over to my friend's house I never have troubles. All my friends have hypoallergenic dogs and I'm completely fine with them. How about a hypoallergenic one if possible.

you can get a poodle mix. I have read that long haired dogs are best for allergy sufferers. I am one, too!
