My dog likes to eat other dogs dried poop, why?
-
My 7 year old Cocker Spaniel likes to eat other dogs dried poop when I take him on his walks. We live in an apartment so I take him out on daily walks 4 times per day, since he only potties outside. When we are walking he can't see any dried poop (like old poop) because he eats it, I pull him away from it but he gets really strong and gets it. I am careful and try to avoid it but sometimes he finds it on the grass, I guess some people don't clean up after their dogs. And it is not that he is hungry since I feed him in the morning and evening. Why is it that some dogs like eating other dogs poop? That's disgusting.

Answer:
Because the diet contains high protein. Its a nasty habit and must be stopped. You can buy a safe product to add to the diet, or change the diet completely. Look around for high organic raw meat diet if you can, or processed food that contains NO by product, No Gluten, NO Corn.

By feeding your dog a different dog food, high in protein low in carbs and grain free, he may stop this nasty habit. Your also going to have to help train him out of it. YOu can carry around a spray bottle of that bitter stuff to spray (but this will eventually be costly), or you can just be aware of where it is and when he gets to it quickly jerk and release on the leash and give a firm NO!
im not sure *** to WHY but there is a product at the pet store that makes dogs not want to eat poop or there poop or something and its also something u might want to talk to your vet about
he might have some kind of defiencies the same thing that causes dogs to want to eat grass and dirt.
He is probably trying to show his dominance.
Because of what the dog that left the poop ate something that smells good to ur dog, its nothing about dominance, but it smells good to your dog and he wants to try it(and finds it taste good) anything that stinks to us humans smells good to dogs and what is nasty to us humans taste good to dogs.
Teach him to "leave it". And yes, other people not picking up dog poop irritates the daylights out of me. Dogs eat poop. Heaven only knows why.
improper training is the reason.
The activity of dogs eating poop is actually a habitual and behavioral problem termed by experts as Coprophagia. It is defined as the ingestion or eating of poop or feces that are neither incidental nor accidental. This type of dog behavior is done deliberately and habitually.
my dog used to do this. apparently they like the taste (especially cat or fox poop, because it is especially 'meaty' and protein rich, gross i know.) if it bothers you, you can carry a bitter spray (you can pick these up from a pet store) on walks and get in there first with the spray before your dog spots the poop!
