What's your snowboard/ski coat?

Whats up with my dogs coat?

  • So I adopted a dog almost 5 years ago now. When adopting a puppy you don't really know what your getting into considering the breeds. Him we didn't know what he would be. When he got older he got a huge coat! It was so thick and heavy, like a chow or a husky. Then his face got bold like a newfy. His skills were so much similar to labs! In the summer he would get so so hot with his coat, so we decided to shave him in the summer and let it grow a full year before we shaved it again. I groom him many times a week and always do, even after we shave him. But I've been noticing spots in his fur that refuse to grow. I put ointments on them and everything! Could this be because he's not supposed to be shaved? Or what?

  • Answer:

It is because he wasn't supposed to be shaved & very common in double coated that are. There is nothing you can do about spots. You do want to mention to vet on next visit to ensure dog doesn't have any other health issues like thyroid than could be affecting hair growth. Ointment will do no good & their coat actually helps insulate them against the heat & cold & protects against bugs etc. - stop shaving.

I agree with the groomer above. I am also a groomer and many times people ask to have their dogs coat shaved because it's either too thick, long, or they are shedding. Many times the coat never grows back the same. Sounds like you have a double coated dog, and double coats tend to get splotchy after a few shaves. Or for some , the hair never grows back at all. It looks bad, but there isn't much you can do. For future pet reference, or for other readers. It's better to just groom them often at a groom shop where they can blow out, and professionally brush out the old dead coat that often causes the dog to be too hot in the summer. It is so much better for them. Also, their coat protects them against both cold and hot (when properly maintained) it acts as an insulator from the harsh temperatures. Sorry , there really isn't much you can do, except leave it be, and hope it will start coming back in. Sometimes after a few years it does a little bit.
