My dog keeps peeing and pooping in the house?

  • I have a pug that is almost 2 years old. I got her when she was about 8 months old. We take her outside multiple times a day, She has a routine that when she wakes up etc she goes outside. She will not eliminate when we go outside with her or watch, so we put her on a long chain and let her have at it. She will then often come inside and then eliminate on the carpet after being outside! We let her inside when she comes back to the door and scratches to get it, which is usuall when shes done with her business. She is crate trained so she sleeps in there at night but i dont want to leave her in it all day while I work as well so I gate off the upstairs and basement and she can roam the main floor while we are gone. I let her outside before I leave, I can come back in an hour and she will have peed on the floor, most of the time on the carpet sometimes on the linoleum kitchen floor. Another problem we have is that she doesnt want to go outside when it is wet, snow or cold, which doesnt work well since we live in Iowa, and she does not let us know when she needs to go ever, we always just have to guess and put her outside every so often. Any help would be appreciated.

It can be one of two things. First, it may be that your doggie needs to be housebroken. I have a yellow labrador that I got while he was 2 months old and it took us 8 months to get him to learn to pee or poop. I suggest you take her out for a walk (maybe on a weekend when you don't have to rush off to work) and keep walking her until she pees and poops. Some dogs take longer than others. My pomeranian normally takes 45 minutes or getting walked around before he pees. Dogs normally hate wet places and will not pee or poop on wet earth. When it is cold, they get pretty cold too and don't like having to go far to do their stuff. My dogs will pee on the nearest plant they see when I let them out on cold nights. Now, it can also be that your dog is feeling some anxiety. She is lonely when you are not home and gets upset so she pees and poops all over the place. It happens. My best-friend's dog gets so upset at being left alone that she would chew shoes (my best-friend then gave her one really old rubber shoe to chew as she pleases). Try being affectionate when you are home and give her extra love when you do get home (even if you feel like fainting at the site of dirtied carpet). Try putting an old plastic mat or rubber mat in one corner in your house and put old newspapers or old pieces of cloth you don't use and can throw away (better yet put it in Your bathroom). See if you can slowly train her to pee or poop in that area. Once I tried that with my old Pomeranian. Took me a while but then he got the hang of it and would pee and poop on the bathroom floor if we were out the whole day. I hope this helps.

Was your dog ever at the point where she was successfully housebroken? From what you've shared, it sounds like you just need to housebreak her, as if she was a puppy even through she's not. Since she's created such a habit of going in the house, it's going to be a bit more challenging. She cannot be loose in the house without supervision, period. Each time she successfully goes in the house she will reinfoce that behavior. Watch for signs, just as you would with a puppy. Circling, sniffing, scratching and get her outside QUICK. If you cannot watch her and I mean directly have your eyes on her, crate her or confine her to a space (puppy play pens, baby gates both work great for this) where it's easy to clean up and isn't big enough for her to 'hide' to potty. Having the whole main floor is a little too much, she needs a smaller space until she learns to not go in the house. Then anytime she eliminates in the house, don't scold or yell...that just makes her scared to go in front of you not scared to go in the house. You will have to completely clean the spot with a good enzymatic cleaner to remove the smell. Now comes the hard part. You need to go outside with her and stay with her until you see her go. No matter how long it takes. And sometimes that's a loooong time when you're waiting. But you can't let your frustration or irritation show, she'll feel it. Sometimes a walk is a good way to do this, the motion encourages elimination. When she goes, treat her, praise her and just make such a huge deal she'll think you're a little bonkers. But she will get it that pee/poo outside = happy owner and good things! You'll have to start over as if she never was housebroken in the first place, and if she hasn't been, you'll be doing it with an older dog who has already developed the habit of nice warm potties in the house. You just have to go out with her, rain, shine, cold, snow or whatever because she'll have to go in all that weather. If it's not big deal to you, it won't be to her eventually. It's not a easy thing to do. I wish you the best of luck! Be patient and know that you're doing a good thing by helping her understand what you want. And in the end you'll both be happier.
