Boxer's lip swollen from wasp sting?
-
My Boxer bit a wasp yesterday afternoon and now the one side of her bottom lip is swollen and hanging down. I gave her 1/2 an adult Benedryl right after and the other half at 11pm. This morning, no change. The vet said just to give her more Benedryl since there are no other signs of a reaction aside from the swelling. Anyone have any other suggestions? Or do we just wait for the swelling to go away?

Answer:
The same thing happens to my rotty. He loves chasing bee's but he too swells up! Keep with the Benedryl like your vet said. If your boxer will let you, you can try putting a cold compress on it to help with the swelling. Depending on where the sting is you could also put baking soda/water paste on it to help drawl out the stinger if it is still in there. Don't put it inside her mouth though. Only use the paste if the actual sting was outside her lip

Generally as there was no anaphylactic shock reaction it should gradually disappear. You would be very unlucky if the sting introduced a bacterial infection, but it's not totally impossible. I think you can dab vinegar to help lessen any pain from a wasp sting (sodium bicarb for a bee sting as wasp stings are alkaline and bees acid.)
You wait for the swelling to go away. Best of luck, Rebel
Put something cold on her lip? I found this site which tells a little about treating stings at home(cited), but it's for humans. Keep doing what the vet told you and the sting should go down, applying ice might take away the swelling a little and ease any pain she might be feeling. Hope she gets better soon.
my best friends cocker use to eat bees all the time so here is what she did for her......make sure that there is no stinger in the lip as sometimes it does get stuck in there. then cold pack or ice the lip as long as you doggie will put up with it and as often as he will allow. also do as the vet said with the benedryl. it may take a day or two to go down but it will help him to feel better.
Its the stinger still in there? The swelling will go down, but it might take a few days. If she is still eating, sleeping and acting pretty much normal, I wouldn't worry.
You can try some cold packs. Poor doggie
you could try ice. also call your vet for some advice.
You can ice it. But put something around the ice pack to cut the cold just a little. Leave it on about 10 minutes (if she'll let you), then give her a break and do it again in a couple of hours.
my choc lab attacks bees and hornets and constantly looks like she has golf balls in her mouth. i use a product called "after-bite" or regular household ammonia. it takes the itch and swelling down within a couple of hours. i asked her vet about it and he said it was just fine to use on dogs.
