Are there any good dog websites?

I'm a cheapo... so I wanna sew my own dog pack... anyone have any good guides or websites?

  • LOL I'm pretty handy with a needle and thred. So I don't really wanna spend 50$ on something that looks fairly simple to make with the right plans. Anyone know of any good online outlines or websites? I need one so Zeke's fat @$$ can carry his own water while hiking... plus I need the added weight on him to try to burn off some of his fat.

Measure your dog for an appropriate backpack size. Measure the distance between his front legs on the lower chest area. Take the measuring tape and wrap it from the dog's underarms in a loop, up onto the back. Record these measurements for the length of the straps. Step 2 Find a human backpack that matches the measurements of your dog. For smaller dogs, children's backpack size is appropriate; for a larger dog, a woman or a man's backpack can be used. Make sure to get a backpack that has a strap that goes across the chest, besides the two arm straps. Also try to find a backpack that is fairly simple and does not have a lot of pockets, straps or zippers. Step 3 Cut off the two arm straps from the backpack cleanly. Take the purchased straps, and mark out the measurements that you took from around the dog's underarms to the back. Cut out the straps. Step 4 Use the sewing machine, or the needle and thread, and attach the new straps to the backpack. Loop them around the dog's underarm, up to its back, to see where the ends of the strap rest comfortably. Set the backpack up by these strap ends to see where it should be secured. Mark it with the writing utensil, then sew them onto the backpack. Trim any excess threads or edges. Step 5 Place the dog's left foot through the left strap, then the right through the right strap. Make sure that the straps fit securely, take the chest strap from the backpack and snap it shut across the dog's lower chest or upper stomach. Tighten it slightly to make sure it is a secure fit, but do not tighten it too much so that it is still comfortable for the dog. If the straps don't fit, take off the backpack, retrim and then resew.

I make stuff ALL the time. Just this past summer I made new coats for my dogs and some of my friends dogs, I make "chilly coats" that soak up cold water and hold ice packs for keeping cool when it's really hot, and I've even made my dog's weight pull harness b/c there is no way in hell I was going to shell out $50+ for one when I didn't even know if she'd like it. As far as making a pack is concerned, I really can't imagine doing it without a sewing machine so I hope you have access to one. Then, you'd have to at least have a good basic idea of what you want it to look like. Personally, I really never have a pattern for anything, I just look at pictures and decide what I think I can do - then make my own pattern. There is a catch: if you don't have any material hanging around that you want to use, if you use zippers and other fancy attachments instead of buttons - making your own could very easily cost as much as buying an outward hound pack at petco. Weigh your options, scout fabric prices that you want to use, and decide what your time is worth. (I can definitely say that if you find some really super cute fabric and take your time making your pattern and putting it together, you can make stuff that is significantly more CUTE than anything you can by.) I actually have never made a dog pack before so I don't have any specific info, but I can say that it works really great to find an example you really like and make a rough pattern based on that. Curtis, don't be a jerk.
