What Are Some Fun/Useful Tricks To Teach A Dog?

  • I have a beautiful red-nose APBT puppy. He is a fast learner and has already learned most of the basic commands (sit, down, wait, come, go to bed, etc.), knows shake and is learning speak. I want to teach him more tricks. What are some fun, cute tricks I could teach him, and what are some useful tricks that have a purpose? And please, don't say attack on command! :P

    I know this sounds silly but when I get bored I play hide and seek with my dog. I tell her to stay, and go run off to find a spot, and call her name. It's so hilarious when she doesn't see me when I'm in plain sight. But when she does I give her a treat. Whenever I snap my fingers and point at something, my dog goes to it. A useful trick is, leave it. Especially when my dog is about to attack one of my brother's rodents. It's really simple to teach too. Hmm what else. When I say out, she knows immediately to leave whatever room I'm in. When I tell her to get in, she either goes inside her crate, or gets inside the car. A classic trick is, fetch. A more advanced trick I'm currently training my dog is, search. I started off by just hiding treats and telling her to find them. Oh and this really isn't a trick but whenever I ask her, wanna go for a walk? She goes absolutely beserks and then I have to walk her to calm her down. (:

Definitely "leave it" and "drop it" I am teaching my dogs to pick what hand the food/treat is in, they have to indicate with their nose or a paw touch which hand holds the treats. Another one I would like to teach my pups when they get older is to put their toys away! That would require advance knowledge of "get your toy" "basket" and "drop it" but i've heard it can be done! Also "go get me a beer!" where you can teach your dog to open the fridge (with a dishtowel from the handle), grab a beer bottle with his mouth and bring it to you then go back and shut the door!

Useful trick: Leave it. I can drop a steak on the floor and if I say leave it, my dog won't touch it until I say so. This is really useful to keep him out of danger, like if you drop a pill or he comes across a puddle of antifreeze. Useful trick: Drop it. Anything he has in his mouth he spits out.
