Am I allergic to Big Red gum?

My dog had an allergic reaction, could it be gum?

  • Last night while I was at work my dog swallowed a piece of gum. Nobody thought anything about it, but when I got home I was told about it. I just read an article in Family Dog this week about the dangers of chewing gum and that it is toxic to dogs. He's a pit bull about 60 lbs. The piece of gum was very small, about half of a stick of chewing gum, already chewed (he got it out of an ashtray.) He vomited and the gum was in it so I figured everything was okay. About 8pm last night he started to get what appears to be hives all over his body, he was scratching like crazy. I gave him two benedryl and he seems to be okay this morning. He never appeared to be sick as far as his activity level and behavior. Does anyone have any information about dogs getting hives or having allergic reactions? Any info would be appreciated.

  • Answer:

Sounds like an allergic reaction, in which case hives would be normal. There's a tablet you can give your dog called 'polaramine' which you can get from any chemist/drug store. Polaramine will stop the itching and help the hives but if they don't start to go away within 24 hours you are best off getting your vet to check it out.

whatever was in the gum or ashtray caused the reaction and the benadryal is the best thing to use to help the hives and keep his throat from swelling up.keep an eye on him for a few days and watch for any more hives just in case he eats something that flares them up again. give him the pill in the am and pm for a day or so to be sure.one of my dogs ate fish and the other got stung by a bee so i used the benadryal and cool clothes on their faces and they were ok but they sure had swollen snouts and slits for eyes.if he continues with hives call ur vet. good luck

i have never heard of any of that kind of stuff but if its alright now then there should be nothing to worry about

My dog also has allergies to certain things. Benadryl does work wonders, however, dogs CAN NOT have sugarfree gum or anything else that is sugarfree. Including the wrapper from these gums. It can poison them, so depending on what gum it was, keep a close eye on him. If he acts sick again, take him straight to the vet. Good luck and keep the benadryl on hand!
