What is a good pet insurance?

What is your pet's insurance company? Are you satisfied w/ their services?

  • I just got a puppy (2 month old chihuahua) and I am looking for a pet insurance for him. I tried googling but there's just too many of them out there. I want to base my decision on other people's personal experience w/ their pet insurance. That would narrow down my choices somewhat. And please don't tell me that pet insurance is a waste of money. If something happens to my puppy, I want to know that I'll be able to provide him the best medical care possible. I don't want him to die because of illness or injury. I am expecting him to live w/ me for 15+ years. So, for me, pet insurance is NOT a waste of money.

  • Answer:

If your puppy is a registered puppy, I'd suggest the AKC insurance, which I briefly used for one of my dogs. I must be honest, however, and say that I do not think pet insurance is worthwhile and I no longer have it for any of my dogs. No point in arguing, though. Hope you find one that is right for you!

You're not going to like this, but pet insurance *is* a waste of money! There are too many exclusions and things that aren't covered. Better to set aside a set amount of money each month and put it in a savings account to pay for vet bills. I'd set aside whatever the insurance premiums are, plus 10%, just to make sure you've got enough.

There is a company that specializes in pet insurance for puppies and kittens under a year old. They are www.Trupanion.com They offer excellent coverage and low rates because they specialize only in the lowest risk pets, those under a year old. Hope this helps!

You're asking advice of people who have had or know about pet insurance. It is just not worth the money in most instances, it doesn't work like insurance for people. You will have to pay the vet first for the service and have the insurance company reimburse you. Read the contracts carefully regarding what is excluded, what is allowed, what percentage of payment they will reimburse you. Sometimes it's a tiny drop in the bucket compared to what the vet charges are, and often takes months to be reimbursed to you. Google " Pet Insurance Complaints", a lot will come up. How any insurance company makes money is taking in monthly premiums from people, and paying out the least amount of money for claims. The same is true even more so for pet insurance. You would seriously be better off opening a separate checking or savings account and putting money in it each month in the event of emergency. Because it will all have to be taken out of there for emergency to pay up front anyway, should your dog incur a big bill. Look into CareCredit, many vets offer it. If you have good credit and are approved, it lets you pay the bill off in installments over time. Good luck.
