What is a "no-kill" shelter?

Working at an animal shelter...?

  • Do all people who work (not volunteer) at an animal shelter that puts animals to sleep have to participate in that? Also, if you work at an animal shelter and you see a particular animal come in that you really like are you allowed to volunteer to foster it even if it isn't one of the animals that would normally be fostered (ie-kittens or puppies, etc.)? And....uhm....oh yeah....if you work at an animal shelter are you allowed to take a camera and take personal pictures of the animals so that you can spread the word that those animals are there? I ask because I was looking considering getting a part time job at our local animal shelter BUT I don't want to (or rather couldn't) put an any animal to sleep! Also, I would be so into fostering animals-dogs actually...but not puppies. I don't like puppies as much. I love puppies really but I don't like the mess of puppies. I know older shelter dogs can be untrained but I just have more of a thing for older dogs and have adopted my dogs when they were at least 1.5 years old. +I would want to take pictures of each animal individually and put up information about each of them so they could get exposure. Our shelter website is never updated with the current animals in there.

  • Answer:

I think that it really depends on the shelter and what their policies are. I think it would be best to contact them and ask them. You could also say that you would be willing to take pictures of all the new animals or update photos for the website. I know our local shelter (kill shelter) tries to get into contact with rescues if they think a dog is worth saving. They really hate to put them down. I would think that you would be able to foster, or if you do get into contact with rescues, you could foster dogs from the shelter for the rescue also. My last dog is from our local shelter, he was 6 months old.

Our shelter has different names for different people. Like right now they are asking for volunteers for what your wanting to do (put up pictures, etc.). They need dog walkers and thats all those people do - walk and groom dogs. They need people to take dogs to places like some pet stores sponsor adopt a dog day and such. I think alot of the ones that euthanize are licensed to do so, at least where I volunteered they had certain people to do so.
