Can a dog catch a cold from a cat?

Can my kitty cat catch heartworm from this dog?

  • My roommate brought home a stray dog 2 months ago. I encouraged her to take it to a vet right away but she insisted there was nothing wrong with her. I have an indoor cat and I have done my best to keep them seperate until she took the dog to the vet. Now it's been 2 months and she just found out the dog has heartworm! I'm terrified my kitty has it now!! The vet is closed today and I can't call! Does anyone know anything about this?!

  • Answer:

Not directly from the dog. Heart worms are spread from mosquitoes. He could catch it but if he has a heart worm prevention he should be fine.

First off, heartworm can't be spread directly from teh dog to the cat. It would need to be spread by a mosquito that bit the dog then bit the cat. If you live in some place where you have few mosquitos in the house, then all is well. The cat could be treated prophylactically for heart worm but I think that is excessive worrying (not that I wouldn't worry that way for my little guys). I think you should just treat the dog, keep them apart, keep mosquitos out of your house, watch the cat and keep on living.

Heartworm is spread via mosquitoes, not from dog to cat.

I'm not sure, but I would keep them away from each other for now, and call the vet when they are available. For now, try to check for any signs of heartworm in your cat.
