How quickly after giving birth can a cat get pregnant again?

I'm fostering a mother and her kittens for a local shelter. The kittens are about 4 weeks old, I believe. I'm concerned that the mother might be pregnant again, as her abdomen is getting bigger and she's eating like a horse. I got them about a week and a half or 2 weeks ago. Is it possible she could have gotten pregnant before they came to me?

Female cats can actually get pregnant while they are pregnant. Their body allows them to be able to go into heat while they are pregnant and if they mate their uterus makes another 'room' to allow the new kittens to grow even if they haven't delivered the first batch yet. Then as you know they will deliver the first batch and the second will stay inside until they are fully mature. Very odd I know but that's the oddity of cats. Hope this helps!
