Should I adopt a kitten that doesn't seem 100% ok?

Basically my beloved 10 month old cat died earlier this year after being hit by a car. She was my little baby and after grieving badly for her I now have the opportunityy to adopt a kitten through a family friend...HOWEVER I went to see it yesterday and a few things have made me feel as though something isn't right and I need some opinions. Firstly she is the only one in the litter (the others died) but still her mother isn't very interested in her which I found a bit strange? Is it normal for kittens to just die after birth or was her whole litter ill? The owners are already feeding her solids and she seems totally independent from her mother although she is literally the size of a rat and only 5 weeks. Secondly she seemed very docile and not very alert/playful - although she did playfully bite/paw at my finger when it was wagged in front of her - do they develop this playfulness a bit later? Most worringly, she appeared to have a limp to her back leg which her owners laughed off as her having it due to a big belly as apparently she doesn't stop eating. She is adorable and her living conditions don't seem great (a couple of other adult cats roaming in and out, messy house, open doors etc.) so I would love to give her a clean and quiet home however I would be devastated to take her home, get her to the vet for a check up and for them to tell me she is not well and will have to be put down or something equally awful....my other kitten was 8-9 weeks when I got her and although she was terrified of me seemed a lot more alert than this one as she ran away from me a lot! I dont want to make the wrong choice after what I have been through. Thanks in advance.

This kitten needs rescuing, whether you want her or not! As you seem happy to take the kitten to the vet anyway why don't you do that and see what her problems are, if she does have any. They might only be minor and if they can be treated you've lost nothing. But if you leave this kitten with that family I think you know she is going to die. Her limp could be something that's been caused by her present owners, and that is very worrying. It seems that you will have a win/win situation if you try to help her. She sounds adorable, I wish I could take her! Cats are all different and have their own personalities, so try not to compare her with your other cat. Please don't leave this little kit with those people, she needs you! Good luck.

some cats are stronger than others this does not nececeraly mean that the cat was ill it probably ment that this cat was just weak and the one that you like is stronger don't worry get it!!!!!!!!!! best of luck with your new kitty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm pretty sure this cat won't live long. She's supposed to be a bit bigger and the fact that the other kittens died isn't good either. Sometimes, when things go wrong, one or 2 kitten max will die. If they all died, it's not a good sign. If you wish to adopt her, make sure to have enough money to pay lots of vet bills.
