My cat has kidney problems (...sobbing)?
-
I am the one who posted about my skinny cat yesterday. the vet called me today to tell me that she probably has kidney problems as indicated by a blood test. I have to take her to the vet again tomorrow for urinalaysis.... I found myself sobbing uncontrollaly when I heard this.... I am worried about the future cost (I am still OK with teh one-time urinanalysis and stuff) and the suffering that she has to go through. I have not noticed her drinking plenty of water and urinating a lot, though. She acts normal and plays fetch with me all time. and she is never very active to begin with. Is treatment (e.g. diet) for such kind of disease expensive? I am still a poor student on a rather tight budget. maybe I made a wrong decision to have a cat to begin with. I love her so much.... this is very sad.

I am so sorry about your kitty! i had a problem with my sweet little boy. he became very skinny and it was because of a heart murmur and we got him on medication and he became much better. we rounded up all of our family and called taco bell and they let us do a car wash in the parking lot. i don't know where you live or if that is a possibility but you could advocate to your school and maybe do a bake sale or call you local pet store for suggestions on raising money for your kitty. i will be thinking of you both :(

Firstly try not to worry! I know how worrying this is as I have been there. My cat has had similar problems. Do you have any lillies in the house as they cause problems with cats kidneys. My fave flower too but I love my cat more. My cat drinks very little and so becomes dehydrated, I've taken him off dried food completely as cats need lots of water to help digest dried food otherwise they have trouble with their water works. Mine had it to the extent that he'd pass blood. Also another thing to keep an eye on is where they go to the loo as they go in unusual places when suffering such complaints. Mine uses the downstairs loo sink!!! GOOD LUCK and lots of kitty love :) Ps cranberry treats from pet shops work a treat!
If it's not diabetes and just the kidneys, it's called CRF. Google 'CRF feline' and you'll find lots of good info on responsible sites there. CRF means chronic renal failure, which is a loss of kidney function. It doesn't mean the cat will immediately die. My cat is 20 years old, he's been CRF for 4 years and is pretty stable. He needs to drink more water to help his kidneys function and be on canned food with high protein but LOW fat and LOW carb. That's the safest diet for them. It really depends on how far along the cat is. My Siamese had 1/4 kidney function for 9 years (this was after 5 urinary blockages). He was fine till the very end, he passed on at age 19 from renal failure. Have the urinalysis done to make sure diabetes isn't involved. Diabetes can be treated. If there's a thryoid problem (the blood test will show if it is) THAT can be treated as well. I have a hyperthyroid cat who's been on methamazole for about 3 years. She's stable too, you'd never guess her thryoid wasn't functioning properly. Listen to what your vet says. Ask questions of them. Find out all your options. Find how to keep her kidney function stable. If you need to, go over to YahooGroups and join a group called "Handicats", you'll find owners there with cats with the same problem and can talk to them about anything. A urinalysis for my other cat was $18. Thyroid meds are $35 a month. My CRF kitty is on canned food, no other meds. We add water to his canned food and make sure he stays hydrated.
Jo Jo I am so sorry about your cat. I am a cat lover too. for one thing I will say a prayer for your cat tonight for God to heal her! Now here are two web sites that you can check out . www.OnlyNaturalPet.com and www Righthealth.com you may get help from those. and or just type in cats/kidney problems in your search bar and it will give you other sites too. I hope this helps you and Good luck and God bless.( You pray too! prayer dose help.) Oh and there is a type of cat food that is supposed to promote good urinary track and immune system I wish I could remember what the brand name is I'd tell you. It should be in about any store. I think its a purina cat chow brand but I'm not 100% sure.
there are medications available that are not too costly, as well as supportive fluid treatment you can do at home, and kidney diets, like hill's kd. make sure to tell your vet you have financial restrictions (don't be shy), and he/she can design the best plan for you & your cat.
Depending on what the exact problem is, treatment and long term care can be expensive. If I were you I would discuss the cost when I met with the vet so they are aware of your concerns and can give you all possible options and use cheaper tests whenever posible.
