When do I start weaning kittens?

About to start weaning kittens...?

  • Okay, my cat had 5 kittens. They'll be 4 weeks old this Tuesday. So we'll be weaning them soon. What's a good kind of wet kitten food that I can mix with kitten formula? They're already nibbling on their mother's dry kitten food a little bit, but not enough for it to be considered a "meal" Also, any advise for Litter box training would be great!

    If they're already nibbling the kitten food mama is getting (and I assume you literally meant "kitten" food and not adult food), just add a bit of warm water to the food and let it get soft. (If it gets too cold, you can always zap it in the microwave for a few seconds to warm it up again). If they're still nursing on mama, no need to give them kitten formula any more. Mama should be litter training them now. Make sure you get a box with low sides (all 4) because the little kitties can't climb very high yet, and a regular-sized box will be too high for them. Leave a couple of mama's stools/urine clumps in the box so they can get the smell. You can try putting the kitties in the box after they wake and after they eat, but don't be surprised if they just toddle out again without having done anything. They'll get the idea soon enough. Another 7 to 10 days, and they'll be old pro's!

The mom will start weening them when they are ready. At 4 weeks old they should still be nursing, and her potty them. I start to leave water out for kittens at about 4 weeks old and Royal Canin Baby Cat dry food about 4 weeks also. But they really don't start to eat on their own till they are around 6 weeks old. They learn from watching the momma cat. I put out very low litter boxes at around 5 weeks and fill them with non clumping litter as they will try and eat that. You can use wood pellets or clay litter that will not harm them. Kittens should stay together till they are at least 10 weeks old or older. I do not let mine leave till they are about 14 weeks old. That way they are socialized and know exactly what to do with a litter box and how to play nicely. My kittens are vet checked and vaccinations have been started also. R P CAT
