What are the side effects of hepatitis vaccinations?

How long do side effects of feline vaccinations last?

  • Hi, I have a 2 1/2 year old male cat who has been very sick the last couple of days. He had an appointment on Friday (three days ago) to have his yearly vaccines (his first ones). When I took him in, he was running a bit of a temp (103). The vet said that the temp was probably just caused from stress due to my previous move (we moved 2 weeks ago). So the vet went ahead and gave him his shots. He got the rabies, Feline Leukemia, and distemper shots. He seemed fine when I got him home Friday night and into Sat afternoon. But on Sat evening, his temp rose to 105. So since my vet was closed, I rushed him to the emergency vet where they gave him fluids and did an exam on him. The emergency vet told me that his temp rose so high b/c of the slhots and that the fluids would bring his temp down. Well it's Monday now and his temp is down to 102.3, but he is still acting VERY lethargic. He is eating, drinking, and using the potty, but is just not active at all. (And even though his temp is down now, 102.3 is higher than normal for him). I am just wondering if I should take him back in now or if I should wait this out. Is it usual for side effects of the shots to last this long? One more thing, I have noticed that his urine smells very strong, so I automatically was worried about him having a UTI. But he has no other signs of one except the strong smelling urine (no frequent urinating, not drinking excess water, and does not seem to be in any pain)...IDK..I am just worried about him. Thanks

Actually, 102.3 is within the normal range for a cat. I am not sure what you mean when you say strong urine smell. Cats urine is normally very concentrated, so it is pungent. It might be more then normal, or you think it is more then normal. Rabies shots can really throw a normal cat for a loop. And if your cat is not going outside, skip the feline leukemia shots. So the panel of shots he got can really knock them down. It seems like they hit him harder than normal, so it may take him a bit longer then normal to shake it off. Call the vet in the morning if he still seems under the weather. Eating and drinking is good.

102.5 is not really that high. He may be feeling a bit dehydrated after the temp. If he is eating and drinking normally then he sounds as though he is getting over it. As long as he behaves normally leave him another couple of days.

First..if your cat had a temperature of 103 BEFORE giving the shots..the cat either was coming down with something or had something. 103 is a temperature and should not go that high from stress. The shots NEVER should have been given. Please answer this now...who took the temp you got of 102.3 now???? did you use a digital???? 102.3 is normal..BUT for one of my cats who runs 101 a temp of 102.3 means he is sick. My guess is your cat has a virus or infection BEFORE you gave him the shots..the shots just weakened him more...even if the shots are worn off you cat will still be sick because he was sick before the shots. If he is not acting right you need to take him back to the vet..let them do a temp check at least..(using a glass thermometer)..(last time i took my cat to the vet they used a digital..his temp was 101...my very smart vet insisted he felt warm and took it over with a glass thermometer...103.5..big difference). If the cat still has a temp he needs antibiotics and he should be fine. If he is still not feeling well and has no temp then you might want to do some blood work and a urinalysis just to be sure. And just for the record ..you should NEVER give all those vaccinations at one time.

They can last weeks. Whenever my dog has a reaction to something, we give him Benedryl. It works, they need like 6 tablets though. He had a reaction to Frontline flea medicine, and that's what we did. We kept giving him Benedryl until the Frontline was off his body and out of his system. The reaction will last as long as the medication will be in his body... Until it has been diluted. I hope this helps!!
