How long should an eye infection last or take too heal?

My Kitten has seemed to have scratched her eye .. How long will it take to heal!?

  • Hi there, I just adopted a Kitten from the OSPCA. I have had her for about a week now, but on Saturday night she had scratched her cornea. I noticed that her eye was tearing then not even half hour later, her "third eyelid" was completely covering the actual eye ball. It also appeared to be really swollen around the infected eye and was pawing at it a lot. That Saturday night around 8:00 p.m. I rushed her into a 24 hour emergency clinic, they had told me she had scratched her eye and that it wasn't infected yet but it was starting to ulcer. So they prescribed her a "Cone" to put around her neck to prevent the scratching, eye drops and oral medication. The veterinarian told us to get looked at on Monday, so the following Monday we got her looked at by our veterinarian - she say's that her Cornea is indeed scratched and that we need to continue with the antibiotics and "Cone" treatment, then bring her in Friday. * I'm wondering, should I be cleaning the gunk around her eye? I don't have any special cleaner, so I would think to use warm water .. Also how long does a scratch on the cornea usually take to heal?

Yes, you can clean it with some gauze that is sterile, always wiping from the tear duct AWAY from the eye. And you can use warm water..... Don't use the gauze piece twice!!!!!. If it isn't infected, you don't want it to become infected by smearing germs back into the eye. Use a new piece of gauze for each time you wipe the eye. Continue with the vet's recommendations on the meds...... and do keep your appointment on Friday
