Is polysporin and triple antibiotic ointment the same?

Can you use Polysporin antibiotic ointment on a cat?

  • I know you cannot give animals human medication (i.e. tylenol), but is it okay to use human antibiotic ointment (externally) on an animal? My cat has a scratch on his ear that he keeps aggravating by scratching it further - can I put Polysporin on it to help it heal?

  • Answer:

Yes you can but if the cat is going to keep scratching it will be difficult for it to heal. Remember to clip her claws safely and this will help too. Just use a dab. If it is a large cut, continues to bleed, looks swollen or is hot to the touch, the cat will need to see the vet for care.

Other answers

The ointment won't hurt your cat and if he'll leave the wound alone it may help in the healing process. The issue is why does he keep irritating the injury. Could it be something more than a simple scratch? It could be infected internally, beneath the skin or there could even be a foreign body that keeps bothering him. It would be a good idea to have it examined by a Vet. They can rule out a complication and manage the wound by bandaging properly or with the use of a protective collar os some sort so he won't bother it and let it heal better and quicker.
