Will my kitten suffer from separation anxiety?
-
I got a kitten a month ago, and I have to leave town for a week. will my kitten suffer separation anxiety? Since i have had the kitten we have spent a lot of time together, and i worry now that me being gone will cause some trouble. What should I expect when I get back home, and what would be some good activities to keep the kitten amused for the week I am gone?

Answer:
Just make sure you have someone to take care of her and give her some attention while you're gone. I've had problems with my cat and separation anxiety. My cat gets sick for different reasons if I'm gone for a few days. Once, I left for 4 days while my mother took care of him. I came back and he just acted sick, not right at all, I managed to get him into the vet the next day and it turned out he had a blood parasite that 'could have been triggered by the separation.' A few months ago, I had to leave for 1 week while a close friend of mine came by the house once a day to take care of him. I came back and he ended up getting sick within a few days. He had a urinary blockage that almost killed him. It's different for everyone's cat though. Those are just my stories.

Your kitten should be able to handle absence without issues, especially if you do everything you can to make her life interesting in your absence. It would also be a good idea to have someone check in on her avery day if possible, since this is the first time you are leaving her. Make sure that her basic needs are met and that she has enough clean litter boxes and that she has access to fresh food and water. If you know her prey preference make sure she has toys that will entertain her and that she has places to explore, climb and hide in the house. If her environment is stimulating in your absence she'll be fine. Do you have anyone who can check in on the kitten and play with her? I think that having stimulation from another human will be good for her if she can't have you. It's fun to get treat hiding toys... And- keep the blinds open to at least one window. She will probably keep herself entertained. We would always come home to bras at the top of the stairs because Tiger got bored and was venting his frustrations.
