What's the best way to help my 15lb cat loose some weight?
-
Hi - I have a 1-year old cat that recently went through a major growth spurt in height and weight. He's a big boy, but I can tell he is overweight. When he's sitting comfortably on his side, his little belly hangs down. And when he is lying on his stomach, his body shape looks like a wide rectangle, meaning you can't really see a waistline. I follow the recommended amount of dry/wet food combo servings for his age/weight, but early on I let him eat more dry food than wet because he liked it better and I left it out all day while I was at work. I feed him one 3.5 oz can of wet (AVO) - half in morning and half at night, and also 1/2 cup of dry (Science Diet) left out all day. What is the best way to gradually get him on more wet than dry? He is really persistent in letting me know when he wants more dry food, so I don't want to make this too dramatic for him...lol. Thanks!

Answer:
Ok, you can just feed him less. I would ignore his desire for the dry food but if it makes you feel better, gradually eliminate it over a week. Clearly, you know he is not starving, just begging. Wet food is so much better for cats than dry (and don't worry about the teeth thing, there is no evidence dry food cleans teeth). Your biggest problem is the weight. You will have health related issues if you continue to let your cat be fat.

wet food has more calories and bad for the teeth. Measure the amount of dry food u put down and gradually decrease it. and do the same for the wet food.. I give my kitten half a can a day at the most.

Cats need exercise, just like humans. Get a string and get him to chase you around the house. If he's pretty brave, get a harness and leash and take him for walks in the yard. Make him jump and chase a laser pointer or remote-controlled mouse. Anything you can do to get him moving is going to help. You may also want to talk to your vet about the right amount of food for your particular cat - the recommended amounts on the cat food packages are just general estimates.
I would just start cutting back on dried food and figure out the wet food later. Since he gets a 1/2 cup per day now, I would say 3/8 of a cup a day would be a good start. Divide into 2 or 3 meals a day to prevent him from eating too much at once and having a starving cat later. See how he's doing in a few weeks. If he lost weight, great! If not, cut back more. Handle the conversion to wet food a bit later if he really likes his dry food. When you get him started losing weight, you can cut back more on the dry food and increase the wet food. My cat is 12 pounds and gets a quarter of a cup of dry a day and 2/3 of a 5.5 oz can of wet a day, to kind of give you a reference point. Good luck!
I would focus on activity! Get a couple of wand toys and a laser mouse that you can play with him. They love to follow the dot of light and chase the feathers on the wand. Get some pingpong balls and throw them, he should run after them and maybe bring them back to you. 1 of mine does that. As far as dietary changes , talk to your vet for the best advice. There are special lower calorie foods for them just like for us
Get him a kitten to play with. My cat was 13 pounds then we got a kitten they chase each other and play around all day so much that she lost weight and now she's even more playful =]
Go to Walmart/Target and pick up a cat leash and some of his favorite treats. Train your cat to walk with it on. Over the course of a week, leave the leash on him, not the rope, just the part where it wraps around his body. Then, a week later, clip the rope on. While holding the rope, place multiple treats in front of him. He'll walk towards them with the leash on, then he'll eventually get used to it. Once he's got the hang of it, take him out for walks every now and then. Or do it the easy way, buy a toy and play with him. :) what ever floats your boat.
by putting him to a treadmill or those jogging exercise just tie him up on the mill then run ur electric treadmill for an hour then watch him jog off on the treadmill.
